    Thanks Chris,

Yes, the hard drive route is a possible solution, however, I wanted to archive ‘once and for all’ and not worry about it anymore. I keep all my projects in a binder on CD-ROM and DVD.

About using QuickTime Pro, I tried it and it worked fine, except it turns out to be even longer than importing the clip in FCP, cutting it in the timeline and exporting it with current settings (i.e. Animation codec in this case). It take 2-3 minutes in FCP, vs. 12-15 in QuickTime Pro. The other odd thing about doing it in QT Pro is that once I re-import the 2 clips into FCP to join them back together (as I would at re-building stage), I find myself being 1 frame short in duration. This doesn’t happen when I perform the split in FCP.

All in all, I think I’ll just keep cutting clips in FCP. Unless another application allows to perform the cut-in-half directly at the file level…

    Thanks again.

Another cool and flexible way, is to capture from the DVD directly.

    I use the following setup:

    – DVD player out to DSR-45 (or other deck).
    – Setup FCP to capture with non-controllable device.
    – Play the DVD and capture in FCP.

This way, you bybass the DVD’s copyright protection. You’ll have the timecode you need.

Not to mention, you can capture in the format you want.

I do it all the time to build myself an ‘inspiration gallery’ from DVD menus.

Good luck, and let us know what worked for you.

    Thanks Bret,

I never had to do this until now. But I might have to put a thought into it after all…

None of the apps require / run better if they have admin privileges ?

We use FCP, After Effect Pro bundle, DVD Studio Pro, Squeeze, Cleaner, Photoshop, Illustrator, Macromedia Studio, etc.

    Thanks a lot Jerry,

You answered all my questions. I will downgrade to QT 6.5.2. As you said, why change a winning combo ?

Also, from your message I understand that whenever I choose to upgrade to Tiger and FCP 5, it will be better if I do a clean install rather than doing an OS upgrade, followed by an app upgrade ? I must admit this seems a bit daunting, considering all the applications I and tweaks I have installed over time… 🙁

Should I go QT Pro 7 or not if I’m using FCP 3.0 and 4.5 ?

Or shall I take the QT 6.5.2 downgrade route ? (I don’t feel too secure about this…)

I don’t want to mess up 2 production systems, simply don’t have time for this…

    Thanks again in advance

p.s.: I’ve just tried entering my QT Pro 6 reg number in the QT Pro 7 reg dialog box, and as I expected, it says Invalid Registration… 🙁
