I had a similar problem, and missed this particular post. But after sometime of pulling my hair out, finally worked out that you need to combine the two splines to make ONE spline, and then when selecting the two points the JOIN command works. was about to post, but then my eye caught your solution! So ‘liked’ your answer! 😉
