  • I guess the problem I’m having now is that I can’t figure out how to get Media Composer to relink to any media created outside of Media Composer itself. I’m wondering if this is because when I manually add an MXF file to the \Avid MediaFiles\ directory, when I look in the Media Tool, the new files show up but there’s no source file or source path for the new MXF file, whereas the MXF file that Media Composer creates has info for the source file and path.

Does Media Composer use the source file information in order to link two clips? Or is there something else Media Composer “looks for” in order to match up two files?

Another question would be, is there any way to effectively select File A and File B and tell Media Composer “Link this file to this file”?

I might still be best off manually transcoding everything inside of Media Composer, but I’m just wanting to do all my homework before I make a decision.

  • Thanks for the reply, Michael.

I should have been more specific. The transcoding to DNxHD 36 would ideally be done outside of Media Composer. The reason for this is to be able to transcode such a large volume of files at once. As Media Composer seems to randomly fail while transcoding, if I’m transcoding thousands of files it would take a lot of baby-sitting in order to keep the process going.

  • I really appreciate that info!

With that in mind, does it sounds like my workflow is about the most ideal for transcoding such a volume of footage? It would be nice if there was some way to tell Media Composer to transcode EVERYTHING in this folder, including all its subfolders, and then just let it churn away for days and days.

  • Appreciate the insight, Michael.

With the concerns about AMA becoming a hindrance, is it possible to “blow it out of the water” with a top-of-the-line computer? Maybe that’s not yet feasible, but it wouldn’t surprise me if at some point MC could handle anything you throw at it without the need to transcode, providing the computer is fast enough.

Sorry to hear that, but also somewhat comforted to know that I’m not alone…

I too have gotten into the habit of hitting Ctrl + S every few seconds! 🙂

Here are a couple of threads from the Sony forums that deal with the crashing and P2 MXF files. Unfortunately, nobody has found a fix yet, but I’m going to be watching in hope of finding good news:

I’ll try to report back if I hear anything. Appreciate your quick reply!

Jonathan: Just wondering if you’ve experienced any issues with Vegas Pro 12 crashing at all when using P2 MXF files. One other user from the Sony forums and I are having problems with random crashes. We’re trying to figure out what gives.

Vegas does seem to handle the MXF files well, aside from the crashes obviously.
