I know this is an old topic, but I just came across a solution that isn’t mentioned here: Layer Style -> Gradient Overlay.

You can totally make a conical gradient using the Angle setting and there are several controls. I’m not sure how long this has existed in AE, but it seems like it’s been integral for a long time.
