Hey Bruce,
Your response has been very helpful. Thank you for you taking the time to feed in. And yes, I agree about your point about good audio – it is actually more important than picture!!
First a few more details about application… I likely need 2x lav mics if I can afford them. I only occasionally have a boom operator and my subjects move around when I’m working with them, so lavs are my only choice here. For the days I can get a boom operator or sound assistant I will look into those hypercardioids for renting!
Do you have a difference of opinion between the G2, G3 and AVX models? G2’s are used for about $300; G3’s used for $500-600 (they may go down as you said); and AVX – well, I don’t know, haven’t seen many used ones for sale, $700-800 new. And… Can you use more than one G2 or G3 lav sets that occupy the same block? I assume so – A block in the US is the most commonly available for resale. And yes will avoid the 600-700 block altogether.
One of my shoots I did with some rented lectrosonic lav sets, so I’m going to do an audio comparison of that shoot and the ones I did using the G3s. (Same subject, both indoor settings.)
Good advise about the preamp. I would need to wear it around my waist so size is a consideration. (Camera is already getting bulky and would love to get a shoulder rig at some point.) Would a newer model of a Zoom handheld recorder (like H6N) do the trick for cleaner preamps over the older H4N? Or do all handheld recorders pale in comparison to a proper mixer like you recommended? I was intending to run lavs directly into the camera when possible (especially if I’m just using 1 lav set for a shoot), and I’m not sure what you meant about converting phantom power to plug-in power. On the C100/C300, I just let the receivers run on battery power and disable the camera’s phantom power.
Either way, although I have read that the C100 and C300 have good preamps for a camera, I know they would be less good than any device designed for that. So a lightweight mixer would be something to consider.
Thanks again!
