Yeah I got to set up his mic and a/v while in college and hear him speak about urban planning – he was a genius and my favorite author when I was young. Illustrated Man and Martian Chronicles were my favorites – sadly the movies didn’t do them justice.

Yes the 32 bit thing was just for Premiere since there is a checkbox to use highest bit depth. FCPX is using much more than just 32 bit float as you mentioned and the results are the best I’ve sen from an NLE. When I cut in Vegas I leave it in 8 bit mode for speed then switch to 32 bit float for color timing and final render – even if it’s an 8 bit render such as DVD the results are better with the switch though the render times skyrocket.

Did you have Premiere set to use highest bit depth (32 bit)? I’ve found renders out of X to be super clean – colors come out exactly like you create them and Blu-rays look better than anything I’ve rendered out of any NLE. I don’t mind waiting a little longer if the quality is as good as it gets.

Concur – i leave auto-render off and just Share when it’s time – last night I was able to burn a Blu-ray right from the timeline to my Bravo XRP! First Blu-ray I’ve done on a Mac let alone FCPX and the quality was fantastic using the default.

You’re right – I remember crawling on the floor to find the correct two frames I needed to put back in a cut then re-syncing the dialog and fx or music ’cause you couldn’t have much sound running on a six-plate flatbed but I loved cutting film…

Exactly! On my last CG series we received footage from overseas and internally – I created a Compressor Droplet and put it on every Editors desktop so everyone could transcode to the exact same ProRES file at any time – all the files went to the SAN – super fast and easy and we never had codec issues finishing shows.
