thanks for your help.
we just use our Workstations for encoding DVD files. we digitize digital betacam via aja kona card and i would like to be able to get access to those files on both workstations just for dropping them into a timeline and putting a watermark on it inside of final cut. so you think this won’t work via gigabit ethernet?
We just ordered a second mac because its not possible to work on in final cut during a timeline export via compressor. I know the newest final cut studio has got background rendering also for exports. is this right? so i can still work in my timeline during a compressor export for a dvd mpeg file?
with our new workstation we’re going to upgrade our existing FCS to FCS3.
BTW, i’m talking about feature films with around 90min runtime.(digitized as ProRes422)
All the SAN storage i found would be up to 5-7K$. Do i need to spend so many bucks just for my f***ing exports? 😉

I warned you about non standard video frame sizes- your Kona card will only play video out standard video frames
i know about this issue, but if I switch the dimension it plays on my monitor(but just an image section).

but those are not video output formats.
Don’t know how to understand this.
it plays back via Kona card on STP, i thought STP and FCP would use the same “output engine”?

for 3-d Screenings etc. Would it be o.k. to set it up via an AJA or blackmagic HD-SDI to HDMI converter for 2D display with final cut pro? it only has 3 HDMI inputs. or is there a monitor (same size?) which you would suggest? just for a quick screening of HD Material with 5.1 sound. it doesn’t need to be 100% accurate cause we don’t need it for grading or something like this.

Yes…you can downconvert to 525i for playback and output. You do this in the AJA CONTROL PANEL by choosing 525i as your secondary output

it’s a bit strange because STP allows me to playback ProRes 1080P, the same Quicktime.
Final Cut pro dows another strange thing.
My Quicktime is 2,35 so it’s 1920×820 or something like that.
When dropping into my 1080p timeline, FCP asks me to adjust the timeline to the same dimensions of the quicktime file. If I do so, he’ll play back via AJA composite to my monitor but only 1/4 of my native videofile.
The FCP Playback in Canvas is also wrong. And i want to put my quicktime into 1920×1080 timeline to letterbox them all into this dimension.
it’s quite confusing and difficult to describe so please let me know if you need any further details.

And thanks Shane i already enabled 625i(PAL for Germany) for playback on analog out primary and secondary!
I’m so confused after testing this all. including syncing our 5.1 playback.

Hey Gary,

So how do you monitor you 5.1 sounds? Do you de-embed your SDI Signal? Which hardware do you use?

I tried with VTR Xchange but it was not possible to route to my Saffire interface. But its a great tool which helps me to “un-block” the Final Cut so i’m going to use it for capturing purposes in future. I hope we’ll get a new digi-beta player which is able to record.

Hi Gary,

I know that a 5.1 monitoring system is not possible with using the outs of Kona LHe. Thats why we baught the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 which works well with its 6 discrete analog outs.

i wrote an email to support of AJA.
They told me that its not possible to use another audiointerface/ouput then Kona on AJA TV.
Is there maybe another app that does the same like AJA TV and includes routing of audiooutputs?
While playing the Quicktime via QT Player on the “3rd desktop”(AJA Kona Composite out) it is out of sync and does not play back smooth.
i really look forward to get the SDI monitor, composite mode is very bad.
Playback through final cut plays well.
I still have problems with 24P Material. Do i need a monitor which can play back 24p to watch it smooth?
Our beamer(2K, Kinoton DLP/Barco) in the Cinema does not play back smooth either.
Do I have to set the refresh rate to 24?(48…?)
I’m a little bit confused because i see the files running smooth in QT on my desktop.

I’m using the 6 analog outputs of my Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 so I don’t need to decode SDI or AES.
My video signal is routed via analog output using composite signal(we’re going to use SDI in future).
While playing my Quicktime on AJA TV i just get audiosignal on the analog outputs of my Kona breakout box which is connected to another pair of speakers.
We don’t use the latest AJA Control Software which cuses kernel panic in past. Our version is the 6.0. Are there any new features in the latest version regarding audio setup?
I already use the interface for audio output on QT Player and Final Cut Pro(6) and configured it in the audio-midi setup as “standard” output.
