I’m pretty sure that you can’t, but the “unrendered” look is just the single field or draft mode being used instead of rendered interlaced media. You can get that effect buy rendering with the effects media set to draft, or use the deinterlace options in cleaner (though that would do the whole piece).

Mind you, if you are compressing for use on a computer then you are better off de-interlacing anyway, as computer screens aren’t interlaced and the footage will look better

Are you sure that the DV timecode is continuous? Media 100 only samples the timecode at the start of the digitising and from then on inserts its own timecode. If you have a timecode jump, say at a scene change etc, Media 100 will not see that jump and the timecodes will start to slip apart.

In my experience, DV footage shot just using the pause button introduces timecode jumps of a few frames here and there, stop the tape, re-cue or review in camera and the jumps can be huge.

I could still be a drop frame or device issue, but the above is something you might want to check, especially if you are digitising at a low Kb for conforming later.

    Hi,

I’m using an 867 G4 under 10.3.9, internal ATA raid and external firewire drive. No problems yet – but haven’t tried digitising.

What were you doing when the errors hit?

I might be remebering this wrong, but wasn’t there a preference setting that needed to be activated to allow digitising at higher settings ? When you trashed the files this may have reverted to a lower state.

This sounds like a time-base issue. The video output of VHS machines is unstable and produces noisy syncs. Normally a TV or monitor ignores the extra noise and locks to where it expects the syncs to be so you get a stable picture. Media 100 however is trying to lock to the incoming feed and is very choosey about the grade of sync it gets. Normally it is just about OK, but in particulary noisey bits such as dropouts, breaks in recording, fast-forward/rewind, or sometimes just normal playback, the system gives up and crashes as you describe.

The only way to effectively (in my experience)use VHS as an input format is to first pass it through a TBC. Good ones are now coming up on the second hand market quite frequently and for reasonable prices.

    Hope that helps!

Do you have Boris? If so the 1:2:1 Deflickering option in the local project settings will help with the vibrating lines etc. The colours can be tamed with a levels adjustment and probably a desaturation. If you have powerpoint yourself you may be able to make lines thicker by adjusting the settings of the charts, otherwise it may well be a good idea to ask the client to make the adjustments for you.

I also found that often although the whole chart was presented in the Powerpoint presentation, only a small portion was being highlighted by the speaker. Presenting this portion as a zoomed in section floating over the top of the whole chart often allowed it to be large enough to work in video.

I tend to go into powerpoint and first export the slides as JPEGs complete, then go through them removing all the text, (leaving just the backgrounds, charts, pics etc)then export those as JPEGS as well.

In Boris I then import the full JPEGs and shrink down so that they are in a box within the titlesafe area and put a suitable background behind it. If the PP was made to be seen in a large room, I often find that the slides are OK on their own, usually only requiring a levels/gamma change and the 1:2:1 Deflicker to get rid of interlace noise. This last one does tend to give a soft, but not overly unpleasant feel – you just have to decide on a slide by slide basis.

If I encounter a particularly bad slide, either due to size of text etc or layout issues, I can then go back to the “blank” slide I exported and use Boris to Generate new text. Sometimes you are forced to hop into photoshop to do things like thicken lines in graphs etc. Also you can often pop back into Power Point to make adjustments there.

The best way is probably to make the matte shape in photoshop (or similar) and import into Boris as a still image. Then place in the video’s mask track as normal. If you can’t make an alpha mask for your shape, make it 255 white on a 0 black backround and use “make alpha key” in the filters menu. You can then apply a Blur filter to get a soft edge.

Boris RED, (and perhaps later FX’s/Graffitis) can generate spline primitives (circles, ovals, stars, rounded boxes etc) and allow you to draw shapes that can be used for very quick and effective masks.

    Hope that helps!

February 6, 2006 at 4:51 pm in reply to: Help! Chapter points export problem

Success! (in a roundabout sort of way)

The bitvice way didn’t work as it was encoding only marginally faster than the full video.

    But here’s another way.

Firstly open the QT file in QTplayer
Enable the chapters and disable everything else
    Export as Txt to Txt
Open text in Text Edit – edit the format (remove the brackets, change the . for : )
Import into DVDSP as marker list

    Thanks again Floh!
