Thanks for that info.
Looking at this from the other direction. Are these boards standard AJA boards or have they been altered to run with Media 100 HD? i.e. are the boards available to run other quicktime applications (such as FCP) or do they only work with M100HD?
Thanks again!

Thanks for the info!
Did they say if it was possible to retro-fit the media 100 software to an existing set-up that was using AJA cards? i.e. if you have an FCP suite running on a Quad with one of AJA’s latest, can you just buy the software?
Also was anything said about the software going universal, for the new intel Macs?

Hi Jerome,
Ok, firstly to digitise directly into Media 100, the DV cable is going to need to be in the firewire port of the Media 100 card. As you say, that brings up an error. Can you let us know exactly what that error message says? I wasn’t aware that media100 was picky about DV sources so we’ll need all the info we can get.
I doubt that the Canopus box does anything about machine control, so have you made sure that you machine control menu is set to “no machine control” (unless of course your VHS machine has RS422 in which case you should connect that to your machine control cable etc etc)
Alternatively you could try the canopus box into the g4’s firewire port and use an app like imovie to capture the video and then import those files to Media 100 for editing. You won’t be able to batch digitise later, but I’m guessing that if it is VHS you’re encoding then it has no timecode anyway.
While I’m asking, is there any reason why you don’t plug the VHS machine directly into the Analogue S-Video ports of the media 100 and digitise like that?

March 28, 2006 at 6:50 pm in reply to: how can I import .dv or .mpeg files in a Bin with IFinish ?Do you access to a package like Cleaner or similar? You could run the file through that to transcode to quicktime for iFinish.
Alternatively have a search on google for a file transcoder. There are a few around, though some are better than others.

Starting with the easy stuff first, does the error coincide with a break in the recording on the tape? Unlike the analogue inputs, digitising always stops when there’s a break point in a DV recording when the media is coming in via firewire.
Is the error happening at the same point on the tape? Have you looked at the tape via a video monitor to see if there’s a visual break-up at that point?

Oh I believe you – I’ve been through it! They’re a good bunch at Video Europe though, I hire a lot from them and they are always keen to help.
Hope it all goes well!

Try Video Europe – they have HVW-M2000 VTRS for

March 18, 2006 at 7:22 pm in reply to: Quality between image from image browser vs image from bin.Sorry for the delay!
By settings window I mean the window in the top left hand corner of the screen (where you make adjustments to position etc). Clicking on the “face” track, or “media” track in the window where you dropped it down will change that top window to show you settings including “fields” etc.
The Preferences are in the “edit” menu at the top. On my systems the “local project settings” are usually hidden and need to be revealed by repeatedly clicking the triangular arrow at the top of the preferences window. There are also other settings in these preferences can affect the render quality.
Hope that helps

I don’t know what the cost of repair is, but I would expect it to be far more than just buying a second user XS on e-bay (or from the other users here). You’ll only need the card and the encryption code, so you won’t need the crate, monitors, drives etc. As these are the bits that retain their value, you should get a good deal.
Alternatively you could buy a lower model and use the current deals to upgrade it to XR and 8.2.3. I saw a full QX system go for

As far as I know, the Sony HD cams can output a downconverted SD signal which you should be able to input into the suite. It won’t, as you say, be HD, but it’ll be very nice SD. That said I don’t know what outputs the cameras have (SDI, analogue etc) so you’ll have to check.
It might be worth hiring an appropriate playback deck to handle the input to the suite as this will not only give you better connectivity options but will mean that the cameramen don’t need to leave their cameras with you for the edit.
I’ve worked with HDCAM downconverted via SDI into a standard XS and the results have been lovely.
