Hi John,
The answer is “not much”. Usually it’s the peripheral gear (computer, monitors etc) that have secondary value so the card/software on its own, especially Vincent 601 / 7.5 combos, is usually very cheap. They regularly come up on e-bay, or I’m sure that there are many people on this list that have spare systems that they’d be happy to pass on to a fellow user.
It is worth noting that Media 100/Boris are still offering the “Tune Up” deal that, for a fixed fee, upgrades any version or software level to XR and either 7.5 or 8.2.3a. This means that you can buy a really old/low board for generally not much at all and then upgrade. I recently saw a Media 100 QX v 5.0 go for GBP 9.99 on ebay, and I myself bought a p6000 for GBP 10, so it is worth considering as an option.

Hi Karen,
I have a couple of the Medusa cables and they’ve had no more protection than being bundled up with a rubber band around them. I pulled one out of storage a while back and it still worked fine. I guess if you could seal it in a plastic bag/jiffy bag then the connectors will be protected against dust/rust.
My spare cards are stored in anti-static bags in cardboard boxes. I purchased the SDI option a while back and it came with three of the P6000 shaped foam lined boxes so they sit in there. I guess any box would do provided it is rigid enough to stop the board being bent. Other than that just make sure your packaging is anti-static, and keeps the board dust/moisture free.

Hi Andy,
If you use Flip4mac, you can export directly from the timeline – it appears as an export option in the export from edit suite option.
I used to use Cleaner 5.1 and Flip4Mac is much much faster, plus it looks nicer in my opinion.

Re: the Quad – pull the new RAM, see if it boots, it could be a RAM issue. Do you get any signs of life from the PSU (i.e does the power light come on etc) or is it completely dead ? If so the issue could be a dead PSU/fuse etc. Let us know some more details!
re: the hard disk. The Quad G5 is SATA isn’t it? In that case there should still be two cables – a 7pin SATA cable and a 15pin power cable. It shouldn’t be the cause of the non-powering Quad though.
re: slots, AJA card in 4 (furthest from graphics card, SATA in slot 2 (next to graphics card) – that’s from the new CPG on the media 100 website.
As for the Airport Express card, I THINK that it doesn’t require an antenna, but I might be wrong!

Hi Chris,
I usually just use Streamclip to convert the MPEG2 into Media 100 media – it takes a while but should import OK. I’ve done this a lot with media from DVDs made in my DVD recorder and haven’t had too many quality issues when re-compressing for DVD at the other end. That said I’ve not had to do it with anything with a low bitrate.
If you are not able to do lossless through i, then perhaps you could use SW or Producer if you have it (or the trial version), to avoid the 2:1 compression associated with Media 100i, but there’s no getting around the original MPEG 2 compression really.
If it is just ‘cut out the bad bit’ type editing you need to do to with this material, there is the option of using various freeware software to cut the streams themselves and then stitch them back together. This is rather laborious, inflexible and prone to unreliable output in my experience though.

m2p is an MPEG 2 program stream isn’t it? Would MPEG Streamclip be able to do anything with it?
Daft question, but will the stream open it QT if you change the extension to m2v and then use its properties to change the “open with” to Quicktime ?

Hi Chris,
I would imagine that the title is at fault rather than the slo-mo. To confirm this try moving the title to another place on the timeline and render it there.
If the title is made in Boris check that the background track is present and set for video. Check also that there are no opacity nodes or other things that can affect the title over time.

Hi Michael,
Set-top DVD recorders get their quality from relatively high bit-rates and encode in CBR. Whereas this is fine for short videos, I have found that long periods of CBR can cause problems when playing in software DVD players on computers – the sustained rate leading to occasional skipping etc.
Software encoders give you the felxibility to fine tune your data rates etc, and with VBR and other filters/tricks can make things look nicer at lower data rates/file sizes. Handy when you are trying to cram over two hours on single layer DVD.
Again this is all about the best option for the job in hand.
You mention about the expense of DVD SP, but everything I make (even approval copies) generally come with nice menus, chapter points in relevant places, DVD-ROM content, and in some cases interactive functions courtesy of eDVD. For that kind of stuff you need software like DVDSP even if you are encoding via hardware.
