What is the difference between field order vs field dominance? I guess I don’t understand this myself, but I have had the exact issues you are having (We were mixing ftg from 59.94, 23.98 and SD 29.97). I listed them below in another post. It was a pulldown issue, I’m sure. The way we fixed it was to trim an additional frame to get rid of a very sleight flash type frame that was happening due to an edit starting on the wrong field, I suppose.

Please let us know what AJA says if/when you find something out.

    Thanks.

Man, this stuff has given us a HUGE headache. I posted a while back on mixing all of these framerates, sizes, etc. Not much feedback…

The best way we’ve found is to bring it into After Effects, interpret footage to LOWER (SD) and size to SD from HD in AE…and then render out.

We have not found the Final Cut Pro “shift field” OR Kona LHe output or Nattress Plugin in FCP to be good enough at dealing with these frame rate and downconvert issues. We have had all sorts of problems mostly with graphics and text not downconverting well or having that field switch issue (HD=upper, SD=lower).

Hope this helps. The After Effects field convert works awesome.

I remember an AJA rep on a video for NAB say A-J-A and have told people for years it’s not ah-jah. They insist on calling it like the Steely Dan album. Oh well…

…now we’ll work on Lacie and Brevis. 🙂

Your card is in the right slot, right? I just had a bunch of sync issues with a brand new Intel and realized that my Kona card was in the wrong slot. You can no longer use PCI Expansion Utility to tell it how fast it needs to be…it’s all set internally. So…Kona in slot 2 is best, I believe.

    Good luck.

Thanks, Joe. That does make sense that the Kona LHe cannot add it on a clip by clip basis, but rather the sequence. This is frustrating and you’re probably right…I probably need to take individual clips out and render them out in something other than FCP. It’s just so ugly seeing little field glitches even when rough cutting. The client is not going to understand…

These spots are broadcasting from beta, but obviously the final needs to be of high enough quality to go to Dbeta or even an HD output.

Thanks. Anyone else have any thoughts on this puddle of framerates?

We’re actually delivering these spots on Beta, but obviously we want to be working at a format that would be good for HD and downconvert well to DBeta or Beta.

Any thoughts or did I make your head explode? 🙂

Walter, I don’t get this at all. Nearly every thing we do has to be redone, due to the inherent field differences between HD’s upper and SD’s lower. We have rendered “no fields” and brought graphics in and they didn’t look good, either.

You don’t get jagged edge’s on your text when downconverting? We do and again, it’s on 3 different systems. It’s obvious and ugly, especially on text moving horizontally.

I’d love to know any secrets you can share…

You will probably have to rebuild your graphics as the field difference between HD & SD make for some serious ugly text, especially if it’s moving horizontally.

Walter-Do you guys do separate SD masters? We have ALWAYS had to do SD graphics. We have never gotten HD graphics to downconvert to SD and look crisp. We have 3 Kona systems…all the same.

I’ll try that, though it was just loaded fresh onto a new computer. Thanks!

By the way…thanks a bunch, AJA. I spend $1100 on a converter and have it shipped overnight only to find out that the “power supply is sold separately.” WTF? What a waste of time and money that overnight shipment was. Why would you sell something that cannot be turned on without an additional purchase?

Sheesh…rant over. They should have at least told me on the B&H site that I needed the power supply.
