Hey, Bob. Every time I think I know what I’m doing, you throw a little morsel of wisdom out there.

Why not “Journaled” under RAID Settings? I’m pretty sure that’s the way I’ve done my past 2 RAIDS and they work fine, but am I taking a performance hit or something? I have this brand new 5x750gig RAID that I just set up. Nothings on it yet, so let me know if I should re-initialize it with “Extended” but not “Journaled.”

Thanks a ton. Good stuff here…

Bob, we’re going to be doing a project with 4 SD Uncompressed 8 bit streams multicam. Would changing the block size make any difference for this scenario? What is the downside to changing it to 128k? There must be a downside or wouldn’t they just ship them like that?

    Thanks again!

  • Bob is right, but perhaps I can help from our experiences, too.

We regularly shoot using our Canon H1, A1 and HV10 and then capture via the KonaLHe using the DVCProHD codec. The wonderful device that does everything you need is the Convergent Design HD-Connect SI. https://www.convergent-design.com/CD_Products_HDConnectSI.htm You can buy it for less than $1000 and it’s worth every penny.

All you do is hook up your HV10 to this device and then take a BNC cable out of it’s SDI port into your Kona. Then, in your AJA settings, choose SDI Input for video and Embedded Audio 1-8 for audio in. Finally, hook up an RS-422 cable to the device. Voila! You now have a capture scenario that takes in HDSDI with embedded audio into the Kona and also brings in Timecode. You control your HV10 just like a deck.

This works perfectly…we use it every day. Short of having a dedicated deck (which I wish we did), this is the best post workflow in my opinion. Good luck.

Thanks, Bob. Do you mind elaborating on the difference between -308 suffix and non? I have 2 Sonnet setups with 5-500Gig Seagates in them. We had one go down once, but besides that they work great (editing SD uncompressed and DVCProHD). I did a search and didn’t find anything on this -308 thing.

    Thanks.

Great review and some interesting stuff. Bob, are you saying we should always change the block size to 256? Why would they default it to 32 if it isn’t optimal?

    Thanks. Good stuff…

Sure, but there is no problem on my computer monitor…it’s only on the output to my Plasma, so it could be FCP.

Is it just coincidence that they took away the broadcast safe setting for Kona and this is happening? Could it have had a bug or something? Not sure, but putting the b’cast safe filter on from FCP fixes the jitter.

    Thanks for following up.

I just bought a 2nd Sonnet Fusion500P box and E4P. Great solution and about the cheapest you can get if you find a good deal on internal 500 gig SATAII drives…which are always out there. 🙂

You’re talking about 2.3 terabytes when all is said and done and if I remember correctly, about 190mps speeds. Plenty of speed for DVCProHD, which is what we work in regularly.

I have been having this EXACT problem. I was dealing with some very nicely shot run and gun footage from digital beta source tapes. On my plasma (component out of the AJA LHe), it was doing occasional jitters that resembled a sync problem. Thanks to reading this post last night, I threw on the broadcast safe filter and the problem immediately disappeared.

That said, it reminds me of another problem I was having last week. I was getting a ton of shaky, jitty footage from some HVX200, DV clips. I attributed it to it being shot anamorphic and the flag being screwed up, because I would change the number in the distort menu to -33.3 and make it unrendered and it would stop. If I would render it, the jitter came back.

So, both of these problems are very similar. It’s possible that there is something going on in 5.2.1 and AJA’s latest that is being goofy on the component output. I’ve never had problems with my setup before, so I hope they figure something out.

    Thanks.

November 12, 2006 at 12:19 am in reply to: Conflicts with AJA and Sonnet Technologies SATA Products?

Thanks for the help, Bob. I’m going to check the lights. I haven’t done a ton of work since doing the Disk Warrior repair, but so far, it’s only gone offline once. I may try to isolate the media file that is causing the problem and see if it’s just a corrupt clip. I’ll update if that’s all that was happening, but Disk Warrior definitely helped. It said it recreated the directory and that at least allowed it to be on the desktop again.

David, as far as some of your other problems, they may be OS or FCP related. I have also had a few FCP spinning wheels. One thing that I know has happened over and over, when I get a spinning wheel, force-quitting will not work. I don’t know why this is, but I always have to restart the computer. Again, it’s been pretty solid, but when I have gotten the spinning wheel, a restart is necessary.

Thanks for the help on the RAID stuff. I’m hardly a pro at this…first time RAID guy here, though I’ve been FCP’ing since day 1.

Very interesting. I just recently have been having very similar problems, too. I have the Fusion 500P with 5 500Gig drives and the E4P card.

It worked flawlessly for the past 6-8 months and just suddenly started going off line on us. It happens when copying media and the RAID will disappear from the the desktop and say “device unexpectantly went offline.” It seems to do it consistantly on copying certain files. Bob, does this sound more like a drive failure if it does it each time I try to copy a same file? We called Sonnet and they said to break the RAID and test each drive, but that would mean killing everything on the drives, right? Not sure I’m that desperate yet.

Anyways, for a while the RAID was getting worse and worse. It would appear on the desktop for about 5 seconds and then pop off. I used Disk Warrior and it repaired the directory so now it stays on. However, it still goes off on certain files.

    Thoughts?

I will check the cables, so thanks for that tip.
