    One item that missed my attention;
    I have an Apple Cinema 23″ display with USB/Firewire ports plugged into the Mac Pro. I forget how long ago, but I had a sudden freeze that was possibly the first crash I ever had with this machine. I thought the whole box was toast, but discovered disconnecting the USB/Firewire solved the problem.
    Time went by and I reconnected the ports for some reason.
    Last evening I remembered the incident and unplugged the ports again leaving only the DVI connected. No crash all night long. I hope I have solved this for MY hardware config at least.

    Next on the list; MY physical memory needs replacing…. maybe I need more fish oil. 😀

    Hello,
    I have searched for a few days on this problem. My 2008 Mac Pro 8 core is crashing with no reboot. The screen goes blank then the cooling fans race. Extremely random, yet seems more frequent lately.

    I might have it narrowed to the RAM also.
    OS v.10.10.5
    2 x 2.8 quad core Intel Xeon
    Nvidia Quadro FX 5600

    Internals were very dusty, removed most hardware (esp. disks so no risk of driving dust INTO them) using about 20 psi blew out the case`
    Tried the temp monitor/fan speed apps with no luck
    Switched graphics drivers to default OS
    Checked the Nvidia fan (ok)
    Repaired permissions on the OS drive
    After a crash have unplugged/replaced the power cord
    I have been switching the ram modules ( I have several ) around according to mfr. requirements

    I had 1 crash at startup this AM so replaced 1 RAM stick. It’s running now. we shall see.
