Thanks for the info, Don. As a matter of fact, the problem “went away” as mysteriously as it had come; after leaving it off overnight, rebooting, etc. everything was back to normal. However, it’s made me wary, and I will follow your advice about rebuilding the desktop.

My “problem” is that the iMac has been so reliable day in and day out for four years I take it for granted. I’ve had some hardware issues, but the software just keeps working. It gets an incredible amount of use now that my kids are older.
