April 25, 2007 at 5:52 pm in reply to: Unpredictable Render Results?

if you have interpret fields off and render without fields, you are actually maintaining your fields.

if you have interpret fields set to the apropriate dominance (lower in this case) and render without fields, you will de-interlace your footage.

if you have interpret fields set correctly and render with fields (set the same dominace as orig footage) then you will get back proper field renders. this would be the better way to work. you would like to ‘deinterlace’ your footage in ae to apply many effects because fields can create unexpected or unwanted results, particularly when keying. but then you would like to reinterlace when you render to maintain the smoothness of motion that your original footage had. using the appropriate settings in ae allows ae to handle the conversions for you, and minimize the hastles on your part.

search ae forums here for credit flicker, author: dave laronde…. he gave a great explanation of how to go about creating a credit roll that would over come the flicker problem. basicly you need to find/calculate a rate where the text will advance in whole pixels, if you’re rendering fields, then i think they need to advance in increments of every other field.

April 25, 2007 at 3:30 pm in reply to: ram preivew stops halfway through for no reason…?

is there anything different about this comp than previous comps? are you working with a higher frame rate or larger frame size (hd perhaps)?

those factors can dramaticly effect the amount of ram used in a ram preview.

you might also double check the ram preview options in the time controls window, make sure they jive with your comp settings, if it was set to preview at a higher frame rate it would require more ram to render. also make sure you don’t have any other apps open that might be drawing resources away from ae. rebooting can often help with unexplained oddness associated with software/computer problems, if you haven’t already tried that one.

as long as things are set up right in ae (be it comp settings, interpret footage, etc.), ae seems to handle all the variations, from frame rate to pixel aspect, quite well.

April 24, 2007 at 8:17 pm in reply to: 16bit project gives colors only up to 32768?

i agree… i was just stating that the 32768 limit in ae for a 16-bit integer seems to go deeper than just colors. have you checked the actual colors of 32-bit in ae? i’m kind of curious about that now.

if your comps are set with the correct pixel aspect ratios (1.2 for widescreen and 0.9 for sd) then you should not need to make adjustments, ae should handle the conversion automatically. ae will crop your widescreen comp, but it should correct the pixel aspeet ratio diference.

if you wanted the widescreen to look letter boxed in the 4×3 comp, then choose layer>transorm>fit to comp width.

i’ve seen that number come up before in regards to an image sequence limit in ae…

it was described as: ‘it seems that there is a limit that has to do with the upper bounds of a 16-bit integer (32768)’ by wuzelwazel.

have you checked on the adobe forums yet?

from the file menu there are some options… consolidate all footage, remove unused footage, and reduce project. they are pretty helpful when it comes to shelving a project, or just cleaning up a current project.

search the ae forums for timelapse flicker, steve roberts had a tip for reducing this effect about a month ago.

    April 24, 2007 at 5:10 pm in reply to: 24p Advanced – A.E Workflow

it sounded like the footage was 720×480 widescreen (pixel aspect 1.2), so you can use the dv widescreen/23.976 comp preset should match.

i think when you render you will need to render as 23.976 progressive, you can add a pulldown in the render settings by setting it to render at a frame rate of 29.97, selecting lower field render and setting a pulldown cadence… however, there is not a option for the advanced pulldown cadence, at least not on my machine. panasonic may have something or a workaround, since they developed the advanced pulldown.
