That is extremely interesting. (No, not your mental breakdown.) I’m not sure where I’ll look into that concept but it’s important to know. What you’re suggesting is that a higher speed will produce a smoother video if it’s a particular ratio to the original and the lesser increase will (or might) create a stutter or other problem.

I’m shooting video for about a year, following 25 years in stills. That’s a perplexing concept. Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

I’m confused. You’re saying a “slight” adjustment might be 150% or 200% and what I did @ 115% is MORE than that? Sorry for the hassle, but let me know what you mean….Denks!

No, not at all. I shot 24fps and stayed with 24fps. My question is whether, generally speaking, if speeding up a clip will inherently degrade the quality. Sorry for the confusion.

My goal was to keep the length under 30seconds. When I liked what I saw but it came in at 36 seconds, I increased the speed to bring it to 30. The by-product was that I ALSO like the look of it.

All that said, is it possible that I did harm to the quality?

Not sure how I settled on PhotoJpeg, maybe 25 years as a studio stills shooter…that said, I submit to multiple stock still/video agencies and ended up with that codec as a generally accepted one. I convert at 90% and always have. (I know it’s a bit overkill) That’s why I was surprised by the weird enlargement after many clips done the same way that have always been reduced in that codec.

Sidebar to this is a major headache I had using Compressor…it would not cooperate this past year and I resorted to MpegStreamclip. In short, as a result of the “enlargement” issue, I revisited the Compressor issue and may have found the answer THIS MORNING. Terminal to the resue…I needed to trash the Qmaster prefs and things are okay at the moment. We’ll see if it holds. I have not tested the exported the files in question to see if they bloat but will later today.

    Anyway, thanks.

No, I use a preset, which I double checked and it’s set correctly.
FYI, one file went from 400MB to 650MB. The others went similarly.
Even at 100%, which it’s not set to, this is weird.

    Again, thanks.

Seems the choice for all but one (H.264) stock footage company I deal with…All the others either request it or include it in their specs.

Funny, I thought knowledge is king. Okay, I do get your point! Also, as a veteran of the advertising wars, I know that a pinhole camera in the right hands can be an award winner. Well, maybe not in this century.
Anyway, thanks for the insight. Take care…

February 25, 2011 at 8:30 pm in reply to: native 24fps to 30fps?

It’s a matter of money. First of all, my income is derived from still shooting with Nikons so I have quite a few lenses. When the D7000 came out at a reasonable $1200, I figured despite my wife’s protestations, I’d give video a shot…that was a scant month ago. I like the camera well enough and MAY have made a mistake about it not shooting 30fps…(it can at a smaller size). So that’s where I am for the time being. Also, many people have suggested that 24fps is fine for what I’m doing. All that said, I HAVE NOT gotten a clear answer as to how much degradation happens if you res-up the file from 24fpds to 30fps???
If that’s not a probably I may do that until I’m richer AND more famous OR stay with the 24fps…

    Thanks very much. Ken
