Thanks for the reply. I tried your suggestion (twice). Both times I got the spinning beach ball. I had to force quit after waiting 10 minutes on the first attempt, and 30 minutes on the second.
Another thing I tried was deleting my preferences and it didn’t help. Deleting preferences is the usual suggestion people make and frankly it has never worked for me – not even once. I’ve been using FCP since version 1 (1998?) and I have deleted my prefs more times than I could possibly remember.

I have never worked with FCE, but my understanding is that FCE:
1. will not batch capture
2. will not work with any formats beyond DV, HDV, and AVCHD. -

I’ve never tried to create and HD disk so I can’t help you with that. But I can tell you that I was never able to make a SD DVD that I was happy with until I tried BitVice. Using BitVice made all the weird artifacts go away. The motion is smooth and I no longer see any weird interlacing issues. You can download a demo version and try it out. It is an expensive program, but I no longer pull my hair out when trying to create an SD DVD!

My experience (even back years ago when I was in a linear suite) has been that usually the smoothest slow motion can be achieved at 66.6% or 33.3%. Your clip is set to 70%, changing it to 66% won’t look all that different.
Of course, I think these frame rates work in NTSC because you are going from 30 fps (100%), to 20 fps (66.6%), to 10 fps (33.3%). PAL might be different.

If you drop any HD footage into an SD sequence it will look horrible unless you render it. Test it by performing a “Full” render on one of the HD clips in your timeline and it should look great.
For example, I just edited a three hour program of a show that was shot in a theater. It was shot with one HDV camera and the camera operator never zoomed in any closer than a head-to-toe shot. I created a 720X486 ProRes 422 sequence and dropped the HD footage into it. I then chopped it up with the razor blade and then scaled the shots to create medium and close up shots. It now looks like the program was shot with multiple cameras.

You might consider building a 16X9 mask in Photoshop, import it into FCP, and put it in your sequence as the top layer. You can reposition your 4X3 shots behind the mask. Your sequence is still 4X3 – but it now has a 16X9 mask.

You cannot post at the BitVice forum until they approve your account.
I got a response from tech support. I needed to change my frame size to a height of 480. That fixed it. But, I did learn that while the Lite version will handle HD source footage, it’s scaler is not nearly as good as the more expensive 2.4 version.
I ended up purchasing the more expensive version and it works perfectly. I FINALLY am able to make a standard def DVD of my HD material withou all the weird scaling/interlacing artifacts! -
I am glad things are working for you. I see that same error message all of the time.
My guess is that if you were to shut off your deck/camera, restart FCP, and then turn back on your deck/camera without a tape inserted that you would once again get the error message. -
You did not state you were changing “device control presets” you said you were changing “timeline options”.
If you have a tape that was recorded with DF you must capture it as DF. Conversely, if you have a tape that was recorded with NDF you must capture it as NDF. FCP will not change NDF to DF or vice versa during capture.
You do understand the difference between DF and NDF? Do some Google research or perhaps consult the FCP manuals concerning capture protocol. Don’t make me go all “Zelin” on you. 😉
