yes, as to the glass, imagine that as a real-life ‘sidebar’.. the vids will stand on their own but we are tying to tie-them together in someway though the tv screens are the primary focus.
Thanks for the input. I’ll post a pic after we’re done. Pretty techy…it’s not ICE LED glass, but it should still look pretty cool!

I would create a new project entirely, then create a blank comp and import (not copy/paste) one of those files and see what happens.
Also, if you have photoshop, try copying and pasting to see if you get the option to paste as a smart object. Just as an integrity test of postscript info in the file.
Next, open one of the Illustrator files and re-save to the latest version you can and note any dialogs that look out of the ordinary and try to place that file into the original comp.
it’s a few steps but there are many variables as to the vector file itself. Somebody else can answer much more about the settings within AE, but I’d check one of the designers files independently first

I’m guessing all the illustrator files are actually vector and there are no ‘placed’ raster images within the Illustrator files?

The tv screens are all horizontal mounted on a wall. The back of a lobby. Up towards the receptionists desk, there is to be a glass wall which will be oriented as portrait. This glass wall is receiving a projected video while the tv wall will be playing a video (a different one) at the same time.I’m mainly wanting to know if I create a regular HD 1920(h) x 1080(v) composition, once that comp is tiled up to 25 different screens, it will look ok. So it will be the one video tiled across them all and on the glass vertical panel, a separate video will be projected onto that so the comp on that 9 foot wide by 16 feet high will be 1080 x 1920.

Interesting… so it’s sorta the opposite way that the Navigator window works.
Remember when Photoshop used to be able to open just a piece of a larger file? I don’t know why that ability was ever taken out; I’m sure it had to do with silly legal mumbo-jumbo but back in the day when one had a gigabyte image and machines effectively maxed out around 2 gigs of RAM (if you were in a big shop!) that was a life-saver….oh yeah, it was called Live Edit.
So, sorry not really answering your questions but I wanted to give it some track.

Sorry if this is akin to “Is it plugged in?” but have you tried creating an art brush? If you’re trying to create just one strand, make that a brush for consistency and have at it but it might be easier to think in terms of a ‘chunk’ of hair and then add strands for extra detail. Not that this is it, but create an irregular patch of black with some small holes indicating space between the hair then add a few strands of lighter grays etc and make that an art brush. So you paint/draw in the big shapes and go back with the previous ‘strand’ brush for detail. Does this make any sense or are you going, “yeah, that’s what I’ve already done and it doesn’t seem to be working!

Thanks Alex, it does help. We’ll investigate this. We just heard a rumor that AME is working on an update that will possibly do something closer to this task, but good to know that the .epr files can be looked at!

I would suggest looking at Lynda.com. I’ve used them off and on for easily 5 years. Take a look at all the courses they have and the teachers.
It sounds like you need a good refresher on all the basics since the keystrokes and such have changed….for instance, to scale an image you have to press down shift/ctrl/alt on Win and drag versus just the shift key like in the old days.
So, it would probably be easier and faster for you to invest $25 for a months worth of fantastic video lessons online than to list all the stuff out here.
Personally, I’ve been doing so much front-end web dev these last two years that I only open InDesign if an AD laid something out in there! I need to get back into that!
