January 31, 2008 at 5:22 am in reply to: Billing for Render Time

There’s no such thing as added value. I learned that a few years ago. If it’s worth something to someone, they’ll be willing to pay for it. I worked in radio and the sales gerbils always wanted me to throw ads on the website as added value. BS. It took work…layout, upload time, ISP rates and so on.

I charge my hourly rate for rendering, but I normally cut the time in half. Most times I try to render on the fly so it’s built into the hours I’m working on a project anyway, but then I don’t really do a lot of heavy compositing or 3-D work, either. If I’m rendering overnight I’ll normally only charge for one or two hours.

$175 per hour? Jeez – I need to move to where you all are! I can’t get more than $85 per hour most of the time, and even then I get the raised eyebrow when the bill goes out. Even at $85 an hour I get outbid all the time. It’s frustrating. But, it’s Ohio, not Los Angeles.

January 31, 2008 at 5:06 am in reply to: Microdolly gear?

I gotta chime in here. I went to NAB looking for a dolly/track and thought Microdolly would be the way to go. Then I found the Indie Dolly. It’s priced a lot less, the track is thicker and more sturdy, you can sit a man on the dolly itself, and the people who run the place are really easy to get ahold of and work with. As far as travel, the dolly portion is a little heavy but it comes in a rolling suitcase. The track comes in 4ft sections and has their own case and are very lightweight. They can also be used in two widths…super skinny, or you can fold them out for a wide, sturdy dolly. We used ours right out of the box for an indie feature, and then have used it for some commercials and the production value is awesome. Indie Dolly also sells a tripod that can go with the system so you don’t have to use your normal sticks. You can pull the camera over to the dolly and back, and the tripod is as heavy-duty as my Sachtler. I got the 100mm bowl, so it’s just a quick change and we’re ready to go. The tripod is meant to sit in the dolly, but it can be used elsewhere too. As far as tripods, we have the Sachtler two stage. I would always recommend a 2-stage tripod…always. For jibs we bought the JonyJib with the Turret pan/tilt head. It works okay, but I don’t love it. It’s not adjustable, it’s bulky and it’s 12ft length (9ft beyond the fulcrum) makes it tough to use indoors. It’s great for outside and overheads of car lots though. He ended up using our jib for that feature more than we did the dolly, which surprised me. I was actually looking for another jib, and this forum has been helpful. Anyone wanna buy a used JonyJib?

One of the biggies is CableCam, but I believe that they don’t sell their product, they rent themselves out. I went to NAB in Vegas last year and found another company called Noblet Enterprises, who have the Noblet Camera Trolley, and I believe it’s for sale, not rent. You can check out their website at http://www.nobletproductions.com

Thanks Guys – it’s as I expected. Probably what I’ll do then is hire the vid to shoot and digitize, then send the files to me for editing.

    I appreciate your help.

Did you render? I know, stupid question, but sometimes I see shifts in graphics, odd artifacts and so on pre-render.

January 6, 2008 at 9:29 pm in reply to: What first? Smoothcam or Color?

I’d filter it first, color it last. The only catch is that you will probably have to export the clip as a movie after it’s smoothed out, then reimport the QT movie, and then color. My work doesn’t call for a lot of Apple Color work – normally the FCP color corrector is all I need – but when I have used Color I’ve had to use this little workaround quite a bit.

Maybe someone else has some more experience with it?

January 6, 2008 at 9:13 pm in reply to: OT Avid not at NAB 2008

I took a very quick peek at Avid’s Liquid – very quick – and was not impressed. It appeared to be at the low, prosumer end of Avid’s technology. At first glance, and that’s really all I gave it, it reminded me of Sony’s Vegas editing solution which I have always regarded as prosumer in nature. I love my FCP, and I’m looking forward to whatever Apple will surprise us with at NAB 2008…anyone know any rumors?
