So even though the camera has an option that claims to be 30F, it’s actually saving it as interlaced, rather than as a progressive scan?
The camera is a Canon XL H1, and it says on the website:
“The XL H1 delivers 1080i HD resolution, along with selectable frame rates of 60i, 30F and 24F. For high-speed subjects, 30 Frame delivers spectacular clarity and 24 Frame gives the look and motion of film.
FRAME RATE: This switch is labeled ‘i’, ‘F1’ and ‘F2’. The frame rate applied by these switches changes depending on whether the XL H1 is in 60i mode (factory standard) or 50i mode (optional upgrade). In 60i mode, the frame rate switches between 60i (60 fields per second, interlaced-the “standard” video speed), 30F, and 24F. In 50i mode (optional), the choices for frame rates are 50i or 25F.
These Frame modes have the same look as progressive frame rates, but are not labeled “progressive” because they are created with an interlaced chip. The end result is exactly the same to the editing system (and to our eyes) as 30p and 24p, respectively.”
So, if I shot in 30F, captured and edited in the 108030p setting, then do I need to convert it to 60i to export back to tape?
I took a Final Cut class where the instructors said that everything for computer/web output uses progressive scan and that broadcast uses interlaced video, but are you saying that basically, my setup only fakes the 30p and I should just shoot any HD footage in the 60i even though it’s destined for the web?
