  • Thanks for your reply.

I’m talking about the g-raid drives without removable disks. The ones with 2 drives striped together.

I don’t think there’s a drive compatibility list as they are not officially user replaceable (at least I think).

I had this issue before on a big project.

As stated elsewhere in this thread, you can’t delete or modify/replace media that is in use when someone has a project open that is linked to that media.

The next time that project will be opened chances are some/all media will be offline with an unspecified path.

And it’s not always the modified media, most of the time is seems completely random.

Hi, Yes I somewhat anticipated the risks but I think I was misread, or I misunderstood the initial Q&A on this post https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/1184691

It led me to believe there would be no issues.

September 22, 2014 at 10:27 am in reply to: What difference would these configurations make in FCP?

Just remember that FCP7 can’t use multiple cores, it is not multithreaded. So the only thing that matters is the base clock speed of the CPU and the turbo mode.

It is also a 32bit application. This means that it can only use 2,5 GB of ram. Regardless of how much ram you put in the machine.

This also applies to older version of Compressor.

It also does not use the GPU for any hardware acceleration. So the newer CUDA enabled nvidia cards won’t do you any good. You will not notice any difference between an old ATI 5750 and a new GTX 780. Sometimes it is even better to stay with an older card just for compatibility issues.

The newer version of compressor is still 32bit but can use the GPU to compress to H264.

    Cheers!

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for your reply. What kind of details do you need?

We work from local storage. The system is an iMac. Media is in Prores Proxy 25p. Audio 48Khz but bitrates vary.

Do you need to know more?

    Cheers!

September 10, 2014 at 9:12 pm in reply to: ZFS experiments.

No worries, I just wanted to check if people had recommendations or other ZFS experiences they wanted to share. I like implementing it myself and want to keep doing it. My goal is to implement systems for other people and post houses to give them some data security at an affordable cost. (without having to rely on other companies). The beauty of ZFS is that it’s highly secure, fast, open source and you don’t need overpriced raid disks.

Guess I will go on experimenting myself then…

September 5, 2014 at 4:27 pm in reply to: Batch add tape names to QT files?

I ended up using QT CHange but did have a few hiccups.

The media in FCP did not go offline but stayed online and the reelname just appeared.

However in the following weeks the project started to behave strangely.

All of a sudden completely unrelated audio clips started to get linked together. Sometimes on complete opposite sides of the timeline.

In other instances the sound was off sync by 30 seconds.

But all issues have been resolved, they have gradually disappeared. (sometimes completely overnight).

Bottom line, get an assistant who adds reelnames to all media upon ingesting –> you will have less sleepless nights.

    Cheers!

    September 4, 2014 at 6:09 pm in reply to: FCP 7 Crashes…

CRASH ANALYZER says that is was a problem with the drawing of the UI or something.

Which version of OSX was thought of to be most compatible with FCP7? Is it 10.6.8?

If so I will boot from an external drive to do some testing. But I don’t know if a 2012 iMac is compatible with that version of osx. there are also thunderbolt drives attached so those won’t work as well I guess.

    Cheers,

August 11, 2014 at 3:07 pm in reply to: Batch add tape names to QT files?

    Hi,

Thanks for the feedback, yes all clips have been converted outside FCP. Compressor, Mpeg Streamclip etc…

The film will be 70% archive material in different frame rates, formats etc… I was expecting to have to online manually and having to re-cut from scratch but that’s okay.

The only issue at this point was consolidating to hand over roughcuts to archivists who need to clear the rights.

But I’ll try the suggested tricks.

Also, changing the reel names, will it have consequences anywhere else? A lot of the footage lives on different timelines, previous cuts, thematic selections… I’d hate to change the source file and see unexpected things happen. FCP warns that you are about to change the original file.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    Karel.
