February 25, 2009 at 2:58 pm in reply to: MultiBridge Pro & P2 & RED

    Hi Nigel,

I use Multibridge Pro for R3D editing and grading and used to do a lot of P2 stuff, too.

Multibridge Pro works with R3D footage well, the “native” clips from Log and Transfer at 2k displays on 1080 monitor as 16:9, so the full with displayed at overscan, letterboxed at ratio of 16:8, so black bars top and the bottom. 23.976 R3D native clip (actually wrapped QT) plays back pretty well. What you can do is to select Blackmagic 8-bit 1080 YUV output instead of 10-bit so FCP has easier time playing the native clip in realtime.

Then you can send the timeline to Color for grading with native R3D features. Again Multibridge Pro works well in Color. If your output will be for film or 444, then choose to display at Blackmagic RGB output choices, if video then choose YUV choices (choices mean 720, 1080 with whatever frame rate you’re working on).
If you are working with 10-bit or 8-bit uncompressed, then you have no problem going back to FCP by “send to FCP”. What you get back in FCP will be pretty much indentical in gamma and color. However, at this point, this combination lacks 10-bit 444 output. I pointed this out in another post, but I got no reply from Blackmagicdesign.

At this point, I render as DPX, manually conforming the rendered output in FCP (using GlueTools with my special white point and black point values) then convert them to BMD444 uncompressed format, then reconform again with the original timeline. There should be an utility come out from Glue Tools to conform DPX rendered clips to FCP in the future.

Hope this help. some more details can be found at http://www.brightminds.jp

I heard that the next update of CS4 to support third party stuff so I suppose BMD is already working with the driver with the beta.

    Baz,

My customers issues are aside from my requests to Blackmagic, I see here at the forum some people are having troubles with HDMI, my customer keep on having problems with Panasonic D5 deck connection.

And the part I was talking about RED ONE and P2 is that “I” can help forum members having technical issues because I spend a lot of time working on feature film and TV commercial work so I can share my knowledge in that field because Blackmagic members weren’t answering.

I sent a couple of emails to a Blakcmagic member and didn’t get replies. I thought they are overwhelmed with support work so I wanted to help.

You can drop in REDUSER and find my post about Multibridge Pro to spare my findings with RED ONE workflow. It really works pretty well with R3D. The top request I have is for Blackmagic to support direct Blackmagic RGB444 output from Color. At this point, DPX out and using Glue Tools with certain setting to back to FCP retains very close gamma appearance. I’m hoping I can directly render out blackmagic RGB444 from Color, so I can use “send to color” menu to go back to FCP, then all the transitions and speed effects applied then master to HDCAMSR. Do you know of any bettet route?

  • The above problem seems to be caused by having a patcher in the middle.
However, other system coming in to the same patcher and to the Panasonic D5 deck even has longer cable length but it has no problem.

Do you think Multibridge Pro’s HDSDI signal doesn’t have as much tolerance than other sysmtes?

Does anyone know little more affordable repeaters than AJAHD5DA (because I would prepare two of them)?

    Joshua,

Thank you very much for responding, it’s good to see you’re around, because I haven’t been getting any responses back from Blackmagic lately.

I have sold some units to NHK and NHK related companies and they are all having issues but not getting anywhere (BMDJapan is helping us, thanks to them, but we need little faster to pin point the issue).

I see many others on this forum that are not answered, so can you folks try to take care that? I will try to help on my side to answer unanswered questions if the topic is about how to use the products (especially someting to do with RED ONE and P2).

    Let’s gain good reputation.

    Hi Vico,

The issue could be resolved with Apple updating the Color proper way, but I want to know what the BMD’s plan or forcast is like for this because if not, then I might have to recommend Kona 3 to my customers.

But resolution free multibrdige would be great. Eclipse price went down whole a lot so I was expecting something to come up.

Let me know if you hear something more.

Hmmm, I see this all over but I never seen one that doesn’t work yet.
I saw someone’s post that he had to return the unit to get it replaced.
Maybe you should send your back?

The HDMI from Multibridge Pro should be working, at least at my clients.
Which video format are you working with?
