I think of the functionality you are looking for can be found in the Tools listing. For instance, Timeline is Ctrl+0 (CMD+0), Composer window is Ctrl+4. You could assign these to other keys if you like.

When in “Source” or “Record” window (Composer), ESC will toggle between them.

You can view the Keyboard layout (Settings>Keyboard) and with Ctrl+3 can reassign.

As far as the timeline is concerned; V1 is always V1 even if you change the order of your tracks. I like to put the TC1 track between my video and audio which makes it easy to get out of effects mode or to scroll. Hold Ctrl (CMD) and drag the track up or down.

Avid doesn’t work like FCP. You don’t need to dump Preferences. If you are getting errors, exit and restart the app. If errors continue, reboot.

There is an old Avid adage, “Activate, Indicate, Operate”. That is true for almost any edit system. Activate the window or timeline you want to work with. Indicate the function you want (in this case, indicate the track you want to match to). Operate, hit the match key.

You can change your Temp files directory. Settings > General

But the Attic will always be written to the same drive that you save your project to. Select “External” when starting a project and choose which drive you want to save to.

Other than taking up valuable space on the SSD, and long-term issues of read/write/erase to SSD’s, I haven’t heard of problems saving files to that drive.

If you like a more colorful timeline (or less colorful) than the standard colors available, try holding the Option/Alt button while selecting any color.

Daivd mentioned: “Also the audio mixing and manipulation was waaaay better in FC until I learn otherwise.” Have you turned on the Clip Levels and audio waveform options. This will increase your ability to manipulate audio in the timeline. I really like the way FCP handles audio in the source window – wish MC did the same.

You could change your desktop to a solid color. 🙂 Not really what you are looking for, I know. With MC open, hit CMD+Option+H to hide others.
