Thanks to all who responded to my post here and my question about P2 import to FCP Studio 2. Accept my humble apologies if I have offended anyone in any way by reaching out to an excellent source of information, sometime better than any manual out there!

    Peace.

    Hi Eric,

Great question (bitrates) to which I have no good answer. Our post process was very traditional: material shot on Panasonic DVX100A, 24P, anamorphic lens, captured via firewire to drive arrays on a G4 dual 1.42, edited on FCP 5.0 (we bought the whole Final Cut Studio 5.0). The final film, Waterbuster (see http://www.waterbuster.org) was uprezed to HDCAM for the film festival and we have a DVCAM master as well. All my screener copies were simply burned from DVD Studio Pro 4 (you’re right, not 2)and were sufficient for that purpose.

However, the screeners definitely display a “chunky” quality in the fades and dissolves and to me are unacceptable for the final product.

As far as bitrates are concerned you’ve touched on a subject that I know nothing of (though I am a fast learner!) and wonder how bitrate fits into the matrix of it all. Please reply as I look forward to your advice and thoughts.

Check out a program called Photo to Movie for a great way to sketchpad your ideas before building them out into a formal edit process. I think you’ll find the program has all the tools you require for just about everything you’ve mentioned.

Just a few thoughts…. I have a G4 1.42 and the thing has been overclocked to 1.53ghz. I added drives for a total of 740gb internal and just added a new card (Radeon 9200/256mb), the machine is a winner and short of a new G5 I couldn’t be happier. Louder than hell, though.

I think your biggest downfall is the clock speed. You should do a little research and see if you can upgrade the CPU’s at a reasonable price.
