August 15, 2011 at 5:48 am in reply to: Wedding Videography – Switching between monopod, slider, and steadicamWe do a TON of wedding films, also all DSLR. (examples of our latest stuff can be seen at https://www.vimeo.com/hdmweb )
We frequently only have two cinematographers on a wedding shoot. Sometimes we will have 4 at huge events like Indian weddings, and sometimes only one. We will have multiple dedicated camera/lens setups ready to go (a steadicam, slider setup, monopod setup, tripod setup, etc…). That way we just set one system aside and grab another one for quick changes. We also use universal quick release plates across all our cameras and equipment for rapid switching around when needed. Part of it getting to a point with your gear where it works for you not against you. We don’t carry extra stuff around, no backpacks, no extra camera around the neck, just the camera we are using. Then tripods and sliders are in their places. All the rest of the gear and lenses and whatnot gets stashed somewhere easily accessible if we need it.
Hope that helps.

Hey Jaron,
Sounds like there is a slight confusion with “zooming” and “moving” the camera in 3d space. If you are “zooming” with the null object z setup I believe you are describing, you are actually moving the camera forwards/backwards (z axis). When you move the camera past a layer in 3d space the layer will disappear suddenly. It sounds like your text is too small (or your camera lens too wide), and the camera is going past the text before it “fills the frame”
To confirm that this is the issue see if the z position of the camera and the text are the same when the text disappears. A visual way to do this (helpful when working in 3d) is at the bottom of the viewer window locate the “active camera” and “1 view” buttons. Change to 2 views, and change one of the views to a side or custom view (leaving one of the views the active camera). The side/custom view should show the camera passing through the text layer at the problem point.
To fix it, change the lens/zoom setting on the camera (not the z position) in combination with the scale of the text layer to get your desired effect. I would work backwards. Start with filling the frame with the single letter. Position the camera (z) to be right in front of (but not through) the text. Then adjust the size of the text to taste. Set your camera position keyframe. Then go to the point in time you want the camera to see all the text and adjust the z position of the camera. Set another position keyframe and you should be good.
Hope this helps.

Hey Doug, you can try linking multiple tracks. I’ve done it on big panning shots before.
Basically, you start at the beginning of the shot and track as far as you can, apply that to a null. Then keep doing that progressively with about a second of overlap until you’ve tracked the whole shot in pieces. So you will end up with multiple null objects that have part of the track data. Then you will link them together in a chain and end up with one null object that tracks across the entire shot. And you just parent stuff to that null, or whatever you are trying to do with the track data.
Video copilot tutorial #45, 3 minutes in demonstrates this. (link from my iPad may not work right on your desktop).

Hope that helps.
