I purchased this script a couple of months ago, and it really makes arrow work simple; plus, it goes far beyond arrows, since you can make custom arrow “heads” which don’t even have to look like arrows.

Joe is fine with me. The effect may help you a little bit in the left and right movement, but don’t expect to get it to go as far as a profile shot.
One thought that might give you a bit more motion is to use CrazyTalk facial animator (https://www.Reallusion.com). There’s a free tryout version if I remember correctly, and a fast learning curve.

I’m not sure you’ll ever get the chin into a full profile – that’s 3D not 2.5D – but you’ll get pretty close.

This looks to me to be done in a 3D package (Max or Maya) using FumeFX:

It may also have been done as a practical effect using a cloud chamber, or a smoke cannon. There are a lot of free Particular presets on Red Giant People, but from what I see, none are really close to the example you’ve shown – it needs a physics simulator to get it that close:

You’re right Walter! My first thought was bringing in the timelapse frame by frame to a video comp, then using the Roto-Brush. But won’t the masking in each frame be likely to result in a choppy look in the final render? I’ve tried retouching video, for example, frame by frame in Photoshop, and I’ve never had a result I liked as much as having worked with the AE tools. This may be a learning experience for me…
