Kind of prefer “Basics” as it works against a segregation mentality, and falls into the pattern seen with Final Cut “Basics”. I might almost suggest “Fundamentals” and hope it suggested that configuration issues would migrate there, as well. Maybe there just should be a “hot” button to the manual and config guide?

But anyone who thinks that being bothered with low-level (fundamental) issues is a waste of time hasn’t been around very long, either. Fresh questions are great… but not when the topic has been re-opened every day for the past 6 years.

A. The consumer advertising around Thunderbolt is that it can “dramatically speed up moving your photographs and music”. (I’m not making this up….)

B. Not your father’s iMac, and we are talking Resolve Lite, which isn’t actually dependent on Apple, and we also know it, and its licensed version, runs better and faster elsewhere.

C. Apple is all about consumer technology. It is its profit centre and will increasingly be.
All business analysis of the corporation (you know, the boring guys like accountants and investment advisers and actuaries and so on) revolves around it as a “gadget” producer –> i(Things).

Can’t help it if democratization is deluding so many people into believing they have talents.

But whatever, its all “spin”.

Bottom line, in its case, seems to be converging toward the fact that it would still need to support some kind of round tripping and shared metadata because I use MochaPro for perspective tracking and Resolve for grade. And even from what the evangelists are demonstrating and blogging about, the Smoke tools aren’t in the same league. The only thing I can see it useful for is its integration of true 3D compositing and then it becomes just another graphics/composite tool — and although Shake is now well beyond its best-before date, I still find it amazingly useful. Its my #1 diagnostic go-to simply because it is so close to the core code — I’m not interested in glossy interfaces, holistic databases, or any of that ultra-sophistication that only serves to hide basic functionality. You could say that about the AvidMediaFiles source media model, which has been complained about ad nauseum the same way that Final Cut’s “anywhere” media management causes clips to go offline. If that’s a deal-breaker for picking an NLE… alrighty then.

BTW, I’m getting really tired of this “where the puck is going to be”. Its just a bad analogy, of the many, casually re-purposed by someone who apparently doesn’t/didn’t understand ice hockey in much depth. If you were to check out my geographical location, you would see that the guy who actually coined the phrase played here for quite a while. And while its nice to think that it alludes to some kind of prescience or Hidden Understanding, you also have to comprehend the degree to which the game bent to his individual force of gravity, that was like the Einsteinian “warped space-time” which really means that the puck position, like gravity, was a tendency that found Mr. Gretzky, and why not if you are the leading scorer of all time? I accept there is some Heisenberg uncertainty in the causality exchange, but pretending to know how the great debate of how media production will be executed in the future is making some hard-to-support assumptions.

Off-topic, of course, but while on the ice, its profoundly discouraging that the game in question has evolved to deal with the “skill” players with a strategy we know now to be called “concussion”. But that’s Darwin, right?

I think this might help if what the OP moved were some Final Cut projects and media… but if he moved “ALL FILES”?

This sounds like an Apple system problem and Finder and Automator might be something he needs to investigate to restore his operating environment.

That’s what my T-shirt would read. As usual, a 2% increase in processor speed, for example “rocks”, “screams”…. you know the usual hyperbole.

So SMOKE is now what “SHAKE” could have been if it had an editor interface and worked in true 3
D. Mocha will still probably be better for generating 3D tracks and rotoshapes –which is something that tends to get really glossed over with all these gee-whiz demos that consist of completely pre-processed elements. “I can compose some really awesome light-ray effects using this sandwich of pre-roto’ed, cleaned-up layers and 3D models, literally in seconds“!… except for the couple of days it took to get the elements ready and layered up to get to this point! How “Microsoft” of them.

For real paradigm-shift… and shift does happen… I’m waiting for someone to re-invent “fire” so that it could be nasally fitted, and I don’t mean accidentally touching one’s nostril after preparing some habaneros. That would be a game changer.

Agree. If you select “Better” as the frame rate conversion and it will take roughly one hour of compression per minute of media. But it will be fairly acceptable if the time/money equation leans away from outsourcing the service.
