I’m very happy with my flashed GTX285 + gt120 if you’re budget conscious.

The gtx285 actually has more cuda cores, for less money.

April 19, 2011 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Resolve v8 GPU question…

Can you estimate the performance gap with Open CL v. Cuda?

I imagine that at a certain point the faster more capable ati cards we have available on mac will outclass our gtx285’s, even if they’re not CUDA enabled.

April 12, 2011 at 3:07 am in reply to: Resolve 8 – pinch me I’m dreaming

Would love to know the performance gap between CUDA and OpenCL. I bet at the moment CUDA kills it and that my GTX285 will have still been worth it compared to the ATI monster card sitting in a static bag.

I’m really excited about the Noise Reduction stuff and the XML support, I have to say I did sometimes miss the hue curves from color, just because it just took me a bit each time I wanted to replicate it with a qualifier.

I’m a little apprehensive about DaVinci Lite, especially in the short term, but I think that in the long run it’s a good thing. Personally the amount of people I’ve heard of doing their color corrects in FCP has actually grown since color has come out.

I think with this development we colorists have a big job to do to really educate the up-and-coming clientele with what you can really do with a proper color correct. We have to sell our craft and not our tech. Since the beginning of Blackmagic-Design, they have been slashing the equipment costs of high-end work, and I think it will be a good thing overall, since there are fewer and fewer things I have to say no to clients about.

It’s our jobs as colorists to sell ourselves, and not hide behind our consoles.

April 1, 2011 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Poll… How many crashes per day?

Shockingly, Zero crashes after a month of solid use. Almost wasn’t gonna post this, feel like I’m minding myself.

    Gt20 + gtx 285. & decklink 3d.

Only wierd thing is if my USB dongle is plugged in at boot, resolve won’t start. I have boot without the dongle plugged in.

  • You can use color without a panel,

You can’t actually grade in resolve without at color panel.

However, grading without a panel is like trying to edit while using a mouse and no keyboard. Sooooo slow.

March 27, 2011 at 3:30 am in reply to: Reinstalling Deckling driver twice a week

    Good to know.

I’ve gotten the video freezing in the middle of a long render, but the render has always gone through, and resolve has woken up just fine from it.

    I’m on a decklink 3d if that matters…

(haha, I just realized why you typed deckling, you’re on an iOS device)

  • Huh… Just thinking if there was a way to “source render” with handles from an EDL, in a way that would work with FCP, that would be amazing.

Currently If i get the EDL with a drive that has all the red media, if I want to reconnect in FCP to media managed project after a a render, I have to render the entirety of every single shot referenced in the EDL or just do a target render (or a combination of the two). In hires premium without a red rocket the former isn’t really realistic.

March 25, 2011 at 2:23 pm in reply to: Resolve DB best practices?

    An Additional question to this,

Where the hell does Resolve keep the database files?

I’d like to simply add it to things to backup…
