I did that on their cheap Canon ZR500 I think. It had a humming sound but I can hear that the external mic was picking up. I just needed to make sure that it was picking a sound and that the battery in the mic has not died. I have a Panasonic GH1 and I can only hear sound on playback, not during recording. I bought an adapter for the av plugs that came with it and plugged a headphone on the other end.
