Thanks again, but no changes. I removed the preference file and got a sort of ‘clean’ opening to PS, but still brushes didn’t brush and smudges didn’t smudge. There was no difference in using either an existing image or starting with a blank document. I’ve never heard of this kind of blocking before, so I figure something went wrong when I installed my package. Strange thing is that ImageReady works perfectly.

Thanks for your reply, Jason, but nope: none of the locks are pressed. PS simply won’t let me brush or smudge. I’m starting to wonder if it will be easier when I just re-install the whole package.
