So, I’m assuming that you’ve got yourself a stereo microphone and are trying to take that balanced, stereo signal and go into a mono, balanced input (or stereo, unbalanced, since you don’t state what recorder you are using). Is that right?
The best way would be to split it to 2 3-pin XLRs using a breakout cable. The next MIGHT be to do some resistive summing so that nastiness doesn’t occur.
Let us know some more info, otherwise we’re just taking shots in the dark.

To the OP: realize that the best way to learn about ENG/on-location audio is to just get out there and do it. First, you must learn what NOT to do. After you’ve learned that, you can learn the “why” and “how come”.

You’ve determined what you need…for now. What about in the future? Do you ever plan on expanding or renting out your system?
You need to provide a budget, too. Shape your budget to your needs, NOT the other way around.
I think it may be best to invest in quality powered speakers (QSC K-series, for example) and buy a mixer with the inputs that you need. You can always buy a larger mixer and the speakers can be used in various capacities from mains to monitors.

I love the Sony C48…I’m sorry to hear of your trouble with the recording.
Unfortunately, you’re really stuck with the reverb (room reflections, I’d guess) and odd EQ sound (off-axis pickup).
Maybe you should try omni next time?

Could it be that the DAC is set so that +4dBu = 0dBFS (or something like that)?
