Hi,
I’m not sure if I can help you because I’m fairly new to editing myself.
As you know the red coloring in the wave forms under the images are a good indication that the sound is too loud.
You will have to look from close up, though, to see *short* moments where the audio is too loud. You can also play a clip and at the end check the two tiny indicators of the sound volume (on the right to the time code); when there is a moment of ‘red’ the indicator of that sound channel will remain red for the rest of that clip.
Important is not to use your ears, because when it’s red the sound is often still good enough, but once you export it (at least when you burn it to a DVD) the parts where the wave form was red sound distorted.
Hope this answers part of your question,
Regards,
Joost

Hello Jeremy and Don,
Thanks for the advice. I thrashed the prefs but it didn’t make a difference. Still good to know that it can be useful to do.
I’m very much helped with your advice on how to find out where a missing clip can be found.

Hello Don,
I’ve done that. There is a whole series of events connected to my project and one by one I dragged a number of them to the top. What I see then is that FCX spontaneously highlights all events in that little window, one at the time, sometimes two at the time, as if it checks them one by one, then the highlighting stops.
In the info window on the right nothing changes; still there is the indication that one clip is missing. When I open the Modify Event References window again, I see that the event that I dragged to the top a moment before, has gotten a lower position again; a new one has spontaneously risen to the top. It is another one every time.
It’s an interesting phenomenon, but I don’t understand it and it doesn’t work the way I expected…
How can I find out which clip is missing? Relink Files is grayed out. FCX is very busy with something; it uses more than 100% of the CPU, even though it’s not rendering anything.
Mysteries, mysteries.Hope you can bring some light in the darkness!
Thanks,
Joost

Hello Don,
Thanks for your reaction.
Do you mean the button Modify Event References?
I tried that twice just now, with two different Events on top of the list, but the missing clips did not turn up. Missing according to FCX, that is, because since the second restart of the computer I can’t see anything missing.
Still it makes me nervous that I don’t know why a number of clips disappeared after the first restart; it may happen again and not be solved so easily.Joost Boekhoven

Yes, it is.
In the meantime I discovered that after another cold start of the computer, the next day, the clips returned! In complex clips with detached audio, sound and images were no longer synched, but they were there.
Now I don’t dare to switch the computer off any more…Joost

Hello Jeremy,
In the project library I choose duplicate project, and then I choose Duplicate project only, without render files. When necessary I select a new destination.

Hello Sitruc,
Thanks; I checked my computer with the help of your article and found it malware-free (at least free of Flashback). Pfew!
The article is worrying, though, and even more so the article listed on the bottom of that page saying that the malware-age for Mac has started and we are totally unprepared for it.
The solution for me is to use my Mac for FCX and use as much as possible Linux (through Parallels) for internet-related things. Not very practical, but better than dealing with malware.Regards,

Hello Curtis/Sitruc,
Thanks; this is the first time I got an explanation about the hash sums.
For me the problem is solved, I hope, but another question comes to my mind: Most people (like me until now) will not go to the site of the software maker but simple click on the pop up window to start the installation. Apparently this doesn’t create a problem in 99% of the cases. I only read about Flash Updates being faked last year, and one fake Windows Anti-virus program.
Is the conclusion that it is difficult to fake these update messages? I can’t imagine.

Hello Bill,
Thanks for your advice. The hotel metaphor makes things more clear!
Do you have some thoughts on my other problem? I.e. that FCX seems to turn a lot of the available RAM into Inactive RAM, so that it can’t be used anymore and the available RAM gets reduced to almost zero. Buying more RAM would not help, in that case.
Is using the Purge command in the Terminal really a solution for this? Thanks,
