  • Nuno,

A short & sweet answer to your question.

“Green drives are not for use in a RAID environment” They are slow, they will spin down at inappropriate times (power saving feature) & are simply not made for RAID.

Single external drive – not critical applications? MAYBE, but I wouldn’t trust them for even that much.

    Eric,

Actually green drives have a power saving feature, if not in use, they’ll spin down. At least that how I understand them.

    Chris,

I know Bob Zelin himself has installed one of these (I know his customer is very pleased with it)…right Bob?

The cost is under the OWC prices indicated for their 16TB/16 bay: https://www.proavio.com/index.php/products/post-production/is316js

A 3 Year Warranty along with 1 year Advanced Replacement of drives or parts is standard.

Just my 2 cents, it might be worth you taking a look at.

  • Eric,

    You are correct.

HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Western Digital that sells hard disk drives, solid-state drives, and external …

https://www.hgst.com To me it kind of looks like it’s HGST by WD, which IS confusing.

Thanks for correcting me, you’ll see Ultrastar drives there.

    Rainer,

Actually the Ultrastar drives are now Western Digital, the Deskstar Drives are Toshiba. See my previous post on that.

    Peter,

On a PC, defragmenting couldn’t hurt. If there’s another utility to do what you’re asking I’m not aware of any. With Mac OS…no need https://macs.about.com/od/faq1/f/defrag.htm

If I understand correctly, you have a 2 drive external? RAID product with RAID 1, but with 1 X 1TB & 1 X 2TB disk, is that correct?

    You should have 2 matched drives, either 2 X 1TB or 2 X 2TB drives in a RAID 1.

With a mixed set of drives in RAID 1, you’re going to lose capacity.
