You’re right, copying/pasting the attributes/properties from the shape layer to the JPEG will work, but I have over a hundred layers, so it will take a long time to do that manually. Especially if I have to go back in and futz with each one afterwards.
I can’t do the “replace footage” command because a shape layer doesn’t have a source (unless there’s another way besides “option+drag” or “option+command+/”). I could do this with any other type of layer though (still, video, pre-comp, null, etc.).
Maybe this feature doesn’t exist. I understand why it wouldn’t, but hopefully it will be added in a later version of AE. It would be nice if there was a way to replace or convert a shape layer to something with a source (like a solid layer or a null), so that it could be swapped out later.
Thanks for the tips. Any other ideas/work-arounds would be helpful, otherwise I’ll get started on the good ol’ manual route!

Make sure your AI file actually has layers, not sublayers.
When importing the AI file into AE, you should get a popup box that allows you to choose how to import the file. Make sure you choose “Footage”, then you should be able to select the layer you want to import.

Hey JohnBen,
If you’re happy with the quality of your 720p compression (8.81GB), you could try “zipping” the file. That should make it a smaller file size that you could then save to a data disc. Standard DVDs are only 4.7GB, but you can get dual-layer discs that are 8.5GB. Once zipped, I bet your file will fit on one of those.

Can you post a picture of what you’re describing?

Dave, thanks for the prompt response.
Now that I re-read my question, it was a bit confusing. Basically, I’m wondering if there is a way to replace a shape layer with a JPEG (for example) so that it keeps all of the layer properties (position, rotation, expressions, etc.)?
Thanks again,

January 15, 2016 at 2:16 pm in reply to: Element 3D Problem In need of Assistance: Custom Layers Don’t Show Up No Matter WhatInteresting. I’m running a 2.7 GHz 12-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 64 GB of RAM and a FirePro D700 graphics card, so I don’t think system power is my issue. Also, Video Copilot’s website says the D700 is supported. I’m not positive but I think this started when I updated AE a couple of versions ago. I’m currently running CC2015 v13.6.1.6. Is anyone else having this problem? Any insight would be appreciated!!
