    Robert,

    If the clip with the Alpha is already in the Avid Timeline, you can apply AvidFX as a Title Matte; this will bring in the layer with the Alpha Channel already recognized, no export necessary, and it should also recognize any background video tracks in the Timeline below.

    Where is the video coming from originally? I ask because I exported an Alpha-based AVI out of After Effects without any problem (that AvidFX understood without any problem); the only things I had to do was set the Channel to ‘RGB + Alpha’ and depth to ‘Millions of Colors +’, neither of which were the default export options for AVI. Wherever the export is coming from, there should be similar options in the main AVI export.

    Under the Filters menu, it’s in category called ‘FEC Effects’. Note also that the effect, by default, will not create any effect. Instead, you will need to set-up a ‘From’ and ‘To’ set of X-Y values, and smear using the ‘Completion’ parameter. At first this might appear like a cartoonish smear, but if you expand the Radius somewhat, the smear looks a lot better I’ve found.

    I’m not exactly sure how the final image is meant to look (primarily, will both Reality and his Perceived Reality be on screen at the same time?), but I would recommend using the ‘FEC Smear’ filter with the PixelChooser enabled. It might also be good, if possible, to key/spline the talent/head so that they are surrounded by Alpha, but the Smear effect would still work without this; with or without Alpha, the FEC Smear effect would be the most direct route.

    Hello Alastair,

    The Pixel Fixer works best when you use the on-screen crosshair, but this crosshair does not display automatically in Premiere Pro. If you have After Effects, you will notice that this is not an issue in that interface.

    To get this crosshair to appear in Premiere Pro, what you will need to do is highlight the name of the filter itself (in this case BCC Pixel Fixer) in the effect controls, and then the crosshair should appear. Note also that it might appear outside of the video (thus off-screen), so perhaps, when you first do this, shrink the video display to 50% or 25%, and re-scale to pinpoint the target.

    To answer your first question, the Polygon Count, when set low, will result in lower-resolution images, but once you get to about 40 or so (about half the maximum), adding more polygons will generally add very little visual enhancement. In addition, the Polygon Count is actually one of the parameters that puts the most stress on the GPU.

    I mention the stress on the GPU because this is most likely why the text is disappearing when you set the Anti-Aliasing to best. To check this, there are a few things you can do to reduce the stress on the GPU. First, try creating a 3D title of nothing but a single letter, and set the Polygon count low (maybe to around 10~15). Also, dis-engage any lights or particles if any are in use. Lastly, if you are using a multi-monitor setup, try unplugging/dis-engaging the additional monitors. If you can reduce the current usage of the GPU, then you might be able to get the Anti-Aliasing, set to Best, to display the Extruded Text.

    What kind of Graphics card are you using? Also, what is your host, and which version of BCC do you have installed?

    Generally this error would mean that the CTI/Playhead is further along the clip than the Motion Tracker has been able to analyze. The most direct way to cause this would be to quickly scrub forward after you’ve enabled ‘Track on the Fly’ – try stepping through or playing the timeline. If this does not help, try lowering the preview resolution and playing again.

    When the error comes up, you should just need to move the CTI/Playhead back to a point that does not show this error, and Play again.

    Is the clip that you’re adding to the Vegas timeline a complete clip, or is there material in the master clip that’s ahead of the start of the clip in the timeline? If you’re only putting a portion of the clip onto the timeline, try placing the entire master clip onto the Vegas timeline, or at least a portion of the clip that contains the first frame of the master.

    If this doesn’t work, try closing Vegas and refreshing the Vegas cache, which can be found here –
    C:Users[username]AppDataLocalSonyVegas Pro

    The folder you’ll be looking for is 12.0 – just move this folder out of this directory and re-launch.

    I tried this on the Mac and did not come across the same problem; my colleague tried it on the PC and Mac and, while he initially had a similar problem on the PC, the Mac never gave him a problem. Based off our conversation yesterday, you are running into this problem on the Mac? Also, which exact version of BCC AE are you running? There might be an update that could help with this interface problem.
