Sorry it took so long to get back. I just saw the footage and I see what you mean. Is this the only footage that does this? Also, do you have any other footage or camera angles (like other stage views or people dancing) to cut to? I like to cut a LOT so I always try to capture something to cut TO/FROM. If not, consider getting some people together to just dance and groove so you have something to edit (don’t forget to get releases).
Here’s my thinking on the vibrating footage: the average person may not notice it. I know that’s a gamble, but there are sooooo many things we notice while editing that the average person never even sees. It’s not an excuse for bad footage, but I was thinking of a grindcore band with double-bass hits vibrating the camera. I was thinking of the old film projector look in movies like Fight Club as a way to hide the vibrations (minus the penis shot…). Put in graphics in time to the music (or the vibrations). Things like that. They help hide bad footage and can add some real style to the video that the musicians generally love. Music videos are always fun because you can take many, many liberties with the visuals – things that won’t work in a narrative, but will in music. Let us know what you wind up doing.

Honestly, it doesn’t sound like you have any kind of formal agreement with your friend. She made a mistake by not having PBS sign something that prevents PBS from cherry picking you and anyone else she might work with. She’s trying to make up for it by having you sign a non-competion agreement. If her primary business is editing and you want to do more editing, I suggest you let her go unless she can, as you said, guarantee work. If her primary business is NOT editing, you are not competing and the non-competition agreement is a waste of time (a non-competition agreement will lay out specific work you may or may not do otherwise it’s a waste of time) and she is just upset that you got the business directly and she wants a cut. Since there is no agreement between you (either verbal or written), she can do nothing except have you sign an independent contractor deal – this will lay out pay structures, time frames, non-competition, exclusivity, etc., etc. or let you go your own way.
As a freelancer, I will not sign any form of non-competition agreement without adequate consideration. In other words, if you want to take away my ability to work, you will pay me for it. Think of yourself as a commodity – you only have so much time in which to do and be paid for the work you do so don’t sell yourself short.
Many years ago, a former employer had me sign a non-competition agreement as a part of employment which is pretty standard. I worked in the marketing dept. as a graphic designer. I left and did the same work as a freelancer a few years later. They tried to sue me by claiming I was competing. Their primary business was manufacturing and design was offered as an additional service. It never even got to court. Maybe the owners were upset with my leaving? I have no idea, but when my lawyer asked them to describe exactly how I was competing, they dropped the suit. Good for me cuz I couldn’t have afforded the legal fees.

Sounds like a tracking issue to me. Also, could be the tape was recorded on EP or LP or some similar mode. Try switching modes and try adjusting the tacking. Barring that, try a different VCR and see if it plays that way.

Hey there, I have run into DVD Recorders that let you do a bit of editing – maybe they record to a buffer or drive first? I am doing the same thing for my last 8 remaining VHS tapes (bummer, too since I have a really nicely featured VCR I will never use again…), but I have the option of stopping the tape and removing a bad take on the DVD recorder – so I’m basically just removing the opening warnings, statements, etc and just getting the bulk of the tape. Its just like sitting down with 2-3 VCRs and making dubs like I did with TV shows as a kid.

I’m of the opinion that a website is for information which will lead to a contact which is what contact pages are for. Use email to stay in touch, but the latest info should be on your site. Also, to minimize spam, I prefer to use contact forms from my website (a good mail form should eliminate spam before it’s sent).

I may be wrong (corrections welcome), but you may want to first transcode the SD card footage to DV NTSC in Compressor (I’m not sure what this footage should be transcoded to, but DV NTSC is a good format) – mp4/h.264 footage doesn’t run well native in FCP. If you first transcode, then edit, then export the video in DV NTSC and then do your DVD files in Compressor, you should be fine. I generally try to use all one format for editing unless I’m mixing HD and SD footage, but I know FCP will still handle them.

Huh. Well, I’m at the limit of what I know. I would remove at least Motion completely if not totally remove the entire suite, then reinstall (since the only fix left after DnR Motion doesn’t work, you will have to DnR the entire suite). I ran into this with my MacBookPro about a year ago and the only fix was a complete uninstall and reinstall – works great now. Also, looks like you have some unregistered plugins, framework problems, quartz composer errors, etc. Best fix – delete and reinstall.

I’m thinking it would be more helpful to know what your machine is – CPU, RAM, OSX version, Mac form (imac, macbook, etc.), what else was running, video graphics card, etc. The crash stack is a bit superfluous since the error is: “Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception ‘NSInvalidArgumentException’, reason: ‘-[FxBitmap setExtent:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x1ec81840′”Now, has the error occurred again and again after reboot? after complete shutdown and restart? Made any hardware/software/OS changes (including system updates, software updates, or security updates) recently?
There’s a whole lot more needed to know. Remember to check the link above first as this will also give you some fix steps.
