    You will definately be receiving a phone call telling you that the audio is out of sync. You should cut the call off at the past and tell the client of the problem in advance. Perhaps Gary A. will chime in with the fix; I believe an adjustment of the sound track length will fix. Basically the picture will import as if it’s 23.97 and the audio will need a similar adjustment.

    Fine,

    The 1200A and 1400 decks will only upconvert through the firewire input port, do you should have no trouble with the DV materials, but as a work around, you’d need to dub the Beta to DV then upconvert.

    In broad stoke, the Diva is twice as bright as a conventional Kino Flo (2’Fourbank) so a 4’Fourbank would be about the same output as a 400 Diva. Of course the unit is twice as big, which is something of an inconvenience to transport, but the increases source size does offer an advantage.

    Hi Sam,

    It’s my understanding that the Dionic 90’s are considered “small” lithium ion batteries so there is no restriction on the number you can carry on. The 160’s are “large” so only one attached to the device (camera) and two spares are allowed in carry on.

    I think you’ll find that the rules are neither fully understood or implemented by TSA agents across the system, so I’d suggest that you carry a print out of the official regulations in case you’re challanged.

    While the concept of matching too like cameras with transportable setup card is enticing, it does not always give you the match that is possible when an engineer, a proper chart and monitoring (wf/v scope and master monitor). This is because , even though the cameras are digital and very stable, they may have different baseline setups. This is more of an issue with the Sony system which allows you to vary the “standard” setup more easily. The Panasonic retains “factory set” and this should be applied before you load in your stick with the setup data you want on all the cameras to match.

    Essentially the matching by setup card is a nifty marketing ploy that came along when digital cameras came to market, to tout the inherent stability and predictability of this technology but there still is some job security for skilled engineers for clients that really care and are willing to spend what it takes. In addition there is also a distinction between setting the two(or more) cameras up on the bench as opposed to doing that and also painting the match in the field. These are subtleties of lighting and flare that can be adjusted for better match.

    This is not to say that it is impossible to match two cameras by setting up to the memory card and white balancing on a proper chip chart, but this is both chancy and subject to the skill of a discriminating observer.

  • Open faced lights (or bare bulb even better) are more efficient sources for use in lightboxes like chimeras, because the glass in the fresnel lens actauly absorbs some of the light output.

    From your description of what you shoot and your kit, I’d suggest you consider getting a 800 Joker HMI kit with an appropriate Chimera like a Video Pro Small and/or Medium Bank. This light is very efficient, kool and burns daylite balance. Check out the website at http://www.K5600.com

    Butterfly refers to the two wings on a butterfly; one being the key light (usually higher – above the eyes) and the other the fill light (below the eyes). the result is one larger catch light in the eye and the shadow from the key is neutralized by the fill light, so no area of the face is in the dark. This is distinguished from “FBI” lighting where there’s two lights left and right, as you might light a document on a copy stand. This is kind of like what the original posting in this thread described.

    It’s great that you notice the two spots in the eyes and recognize it as a problem. I often call this effect “snake eyes” and it’s a direct result of “FBI” style lighting, namely one light left and one light right.

    The solution, as Leo alludes to, is to remove one of the key lights and make it a fill light. This is often accomplished by using one of the lights bounced into a white card and positioning it in such a way that it does not reflect in the eye, sometimes by creating a “butterfly effect” with the key light high and the fill light low.
