Yea, I believe it’s because it is already a Secondary Storyline. Connected clips cannot have transitions all by themselves. When you drop a transition on a connected clip, FCP X creates a secondary storyline and adds the transition to that. So you already created a secondary storyline by adding the transition which is why creating secondary storyline is greyed out.

By definition, a Push moves both videos because one “pushes” the other on/off of the screen. That is why the primary storyline is affected.
I believe you want to use a Slide transition which will slide one over as the other stays in place.

The problem that you might have is that the older OS X version won’t have drivers for the newer hardware in the Mac mini. In particular the graphics drivers.
I had a similar problem with my 2010 Mac Pro. I upgraded my graphics card to the Radeon HD 7950 and apparently while OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard could use it, my old Final Cut Pro 5 complain that it wasn’t a Quartz supported card and refused to even open. ☹ Not big deal for me because all I use from the Final Cut Studio HD suite these days is DVD Studio Pro 4 which works fine.
Partitioning is certainly an option or you could clone your hard drive to an external drive. Either a 7200 RPM USB 3.0 drive or even an external SSD drive. Then update your MacBook Pro to Sierra and when you need to use OS X 10.8.5, just plug in the USB drive and restart your Mac while holding down the Option key when you hear the boot chime. Continue to hold it until you see a screen that allows you to select your boot drive and when you see it, select the external USB drive. You will boot into OS X 10.8.5 and all of your applications will work as they do now. This is how I run my 2010 Mac Pro. The primary drive is Sierra with FCP X and the second drive is OS X 10.6 with DVD Studio Pro.

The drive can be external. I would use a USB 3.0 drive. Try and find one that is 7200 RPM instead of 5400 RPM for a little additional performance.
What you do is hold the Option key when you hear the boot chime and keep it held down until you are greeted with a screen that shows all connected drives. Then just select the external drive and your iMac will boot from it. Not sure how well FCP 7 will work with 10.10 but that’s why you need to keep 10.8.5 around.

That camera shoots Motion JPEG (MJPEG), 1280 x 720 @ 30 fps. Movie Studio should be able to playback M-JPEG natively but that’s the codec that you need to view the video.

I still have iWork ’09 (Pages, Numbers, & KeyNote) running fine on macOS Sierra. You can buy the new version if you’d like or stick with the old versions which still works fine.

Did the camera come with a CD? Did you install any software that was required? Check with the camera manufacturer to see if they have drivers that need to be installed with the camera that contain the required codecs.
You might want to download GSpot 2.70a and drop the AVI file on it and it will tell you what codec it uses and if the codec is installed. If it is not, go to the manufacturers web site for that codec and installed it.
One thing to be aware of is that Movie Studio uses Video for Windows (VFW) codecs and not DirectShow codecs so there may be a DirectShow codec installed but Movie Studio can’t use it because it uses older VFW technology. Also very odd that a modern HD camera would use an older AVI wrapper. Maybe it uses the CineForm codec? That was an HD AVI codec if I remember correctly.

The recommendation that we always give people is that, “it is better to have a $50 mic close to the subject than a $1,000 mic far away” Placement is everything in getting good sound. Place it at the sternum of your chest (around the 2nd button on a shirt). This is the thickest bone in your chest and will give the best bass response for your voice.

That mic will probably be fine. It’s a dynamic mic (not condenser) so it will need to be turned up but having it close to your mouth is the main thing to avoid room tone.
It looks like you’re editing HDV which I edit all the time on USB 3.0 drives so that shouldn’t be an issue. Do you have your project set up for HDV as well? Having you project properties match your media properties will ensure smooth playback.

You can use Track Motion to make a Picture-in-Picture from one of the clips. That will allow you to see both at the same time so that you can line the action up. Then when you are done, just remove the Track Motion from the Track and you should have everything looking normal.
