You don’t even need an old machine. All you need is a separate partition. I have a Snow Leopard partition that I can boot into to work with DVD Studio Pro 4 when needed. At that point the whole computer is Snow Leopard again. Just keep a boot drive around. It can even be on an external USB drive or thumb drive. If you still need Firewire there is a Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter you can buy from Apple for $29. The Mac makes it so easy to boot into an older OS X version when needed.

According to both EveryMac and OWC, the AMD Radeon HD 7950 is not compatible with the Mac Pro 3.1 (2008).

I would go with the ATI Radeon HD 5870 which I have in my 2008 Mac Pro 3.1 8-Core. Honestly, I upgraded my 2010 Mac Pro 5.1 12-Core from an HD 5870 to the AMD Radeon HD 7950 and I really didn’t see that much of an improvement. I ran some benchmarks and it did get higher scores but in every day video and graphics work it was not as dramatic as going from an HD 5770 to the 5870 which has twice the power.

Also note that the HD 7950 supports PCI-Express 3.0 which neither the Mac Pro 5.1 nor 3.1 have so it won’t run at peak performance anyway. I’m guessing this is why I didn’t see a big boost. IMHO, the HD 5870 is a better price performer and a lot cheaper than the HD 7950.

Hmmm… As of the 2016 US census there are 323,100,000 people in the US and the survey covered 1,520 people which is 0.000005% of the population and they are claiming that is statistically significant? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Really hard to say from that survey without knowing more about who participated. The survey sites that 64% of Americans own an Apple product. Did 64% of survey participants own an Apple product? Because if they didn’t… the survey is not indicative of the American population and their claims will be skewed. So it’s hard to take the survey seriously without know who was surveyed. For example: everyone loves to shop. Amazon is the most popular shopping web site… is anyone surprised everyone loves Amazon? The offerings from those companies are just too diverse. What exactly would people be recommending to their friends about Amazon vs Apple? Kind of like comparing “apples and oranges” in a survey about fruit (no pun intended).

Funny that people distrust Facebook, presumably because they manipulate posts, yet they trust Google which also manipulates search results to fit their agenda. Way more despicable if you ask me! 😉

It all comes down to connectivity. The Mac mini has an HDMI output. If the 4K monitor has an HDMI input, I see no reason why the Mac mini wouldn’t see it and use it at the max resolution that the Mac mini is capable of. Most 4K monitors have DisplayPort, HDMI, and DVI-D inputs so I would be surprised if it didn’t connect.

Error code -36 is a generic I/O Error and if it’s only happening on one file I would say the file might be corrupt somehow. Perhaps the recorder didn’t completely write it to disk? Or the PNY card has become corrupt and the file was written to a corrupt area.

I would look for a file recover tool to see if it can read the file and write it to your hard drive. When you are done, I would format the memory card to make sure that any corruption that might be there is eliminated. BTW, I never erase my memory cards, I always format them before each use. Try the Color Corrector (Secondary) plug-in. It has the ability to select a range of color and create a mask to just affect that color and nothing else or reverse the mask to affect everything except that color.

I don’t know how well GPU emulation will work. I haven’t tried running OS X in VirtualBox myself. I know that it’s supported because I use VirtualBox every day to run Linux on my Mac and I see that it allows me to make an OS X image but in my experience with virtual machines, GPU’s aren’t always supported. I recommended VirtualBox because it’s free and would only cost you some time to try. I also use VMware Fusion although I use that to run Windows on my Mac. I’ve never used Parallels Desktop.

Apparently something you are using does. Apple stopped shipping Java some time ago so I’m assuming whatever OS X version you had came with Java and now El Capitan does not.

Go to System Preferences | Users & Groups | Login Items and check the items in the list to try and see which one needs Java. There is no way to disable them to find out except to remove them which may not be desirable. Then contact the manufacturer to find out which Java they require. Installing the latest Java 8 might not help you if the app you are running requires Java 6 (which is the last version Apple shipped before stopping)
