Reinstall should reinstall the current OS which for you is Catalina. I assume you are booting into Recovery Mode with [Command ⌘+R] and selecting Reinstall from there. It should sense your OS and offer that as the only option.
I would absolutely create a clone of your current drive as a backup. I use Carbon Copy Cloner; worth every penny. Plug in a an external USB 3 drive and have it clone your existing drive to it. if everything goes wrong with the reinstall you can always clone the drive back to your Mac and be right back where you started. You can also use CCC to incrementally update the clone drive from time to time so that you always have a complete system backup ready to boot.
I agree that Big Sur should be avoided by anyone using 3rd party software or plug-ins. Almost all of the plug-in vendors that I buy from have sent me emails asking to hold off on upgrading to Big Sur at this time. I also have a 2010 Mac Pro on Sierra (not even High Sierra) and Apple still updates it. There is no rush to upgrade to a new OS unless there is a compelling reason or feature that you must have.

November 7, 2020 at 10:57 pm in reply to: Unrecoverable Error: something something TeamViewerYes, there are some settings that disable booting from external media and you need to boot into recovery mode to change them.
I don’t know what has gotten into Apple lately. They seem to want to make their computers harder and harder to use. I get security and all that, but being able to boot from external media is critical for not only recovering from crashes, but booting multiple versions of macOS. Since Apple has made them less and less backward compatible the need to run older versions increases.

Install or replace SSD modules in your Mac Pro (2019)

November 7, 2020 at 3:09 pm in reply to: VASST Ultimate S PRO 4 not compatible with VP18 (build 373)?Hi Harry, Did you download the latest installer from the VASST Software download page? I’m guessing you only looked at the version number but the version number is the version of the software plug-in and not the installer. So while Ultimate S Pro 4.2.1 works with Vegas Pro 18, the installer that you have may not if you downloaded it before Vegas Pro 18 even existed.
Download the latest installer from our download page and try with that. If it still doesn’t work, please send an email to VASST support and we will help you figure out what’s wrong.

November 2, 2020 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Recommendation needed for Screen Capture SoftwareI do a lot of screen recording for my tutorials. I’ve been using TechSmith Camtasia for years both on the PC and Mac and it has been outstanding. It will simultaneously record a camera and the screen at the same time so you can use your FaceTime camera or an external camera via a capture card to record yourself as you are presenting or explaining in a hands-on tutorial like I do. The streams are kept separate so you can edit them independently afterwards. This is the most important thing for me.
TechSmith also has SnagIt which costs less and will perform screen capture or camera capture but not both at the same time. So if you need just screen capture SnagIt might be a good less expensive alternative.
What I like about the TechSmith products is that they support independent inputs for all of my video and audio devices. I like using a Sennheiser ME66 shotgun though my iRig Pro or Komplete Audio 6 and it sees these devices and uses them so I get good audio. So it will capture the screen, take video from any web cam or connected video device, take audio from any connected audio device (independent of the video device selected) and optional record system audio. It’s very flexible and I believe their is a free trial so that you can test it for yourself.
I’ve also used OBS (Open Broadcast Software) which is free but it only produces a single stream. So while it can capture my web cam and screen at the same time, it only creates one output video so you cannot change the PIP later for example. It is also extremely flexible in the devices it supports. If you just need to record your screen, OBS might not be a bad solution (and did I mention it’s free) 😉

October 9, 2020 at 1:27 pm in reply to: 2020 iMac versus iMac Pro configurations for editing in PremiereI don’t know how these will perform with your applications (I use Final Cut Pro X and Motion) but just from a hardware perspective, The iMac has slightly higher CPU capacity, 2x the memory, 2x the storage, but a less powerful GPU. I think the question for you is how much does the GPU affect the performance of the applications that you use. I’m not up on Adobe but I remember they were big NVIDIA fans and it didn’t matter how good an AMD GPU you had so that’s a question I can’t answer.
I would get the new iMac over the older iMac Pro because the newer generation CPUs usually run more efficiently than older gens at the same clock speed (read: you can’t just compare clock speed of different generations because newer gens usually can perform more instructions per clock cycle).
You can answer your question about 64GB of memory yourself since your current iMac has 32GB of memory, are you running out? Is memory a problem for you? I have a 2010 Mac Pro 12-core with 24GB of memory and it runs great but I don’t edit 4K. 64GB seems like plenty of memory to me. That’s a little more than 4GB per core (for 14-core) which seems adequate.
The two systems seem pretty evenly matched on specs. Given that, I would go with newer vs 3 years older. (i.e., 2020 iMac over 2017 iMac Pro) …your mileage may vary. 😉

It could be excessive heat build up from dust in the machine. The heat sinks on the CPUs can fill up with dust over time (especially after years of use). I would open it up and vacuum it out. If that doesn’t fix it, It could be failing memory. I would run a hardware diagnostic and see if anything turns up. Good luck!

September 3, 2020 at 11:39 am in reply to: Raid 0 created in Yosemite. If upgrade to High Sierra will it read?Yes. If the RAID 0 was created by the macOS Disk Utility it will continue to work.
I actually had a pair of RAID 0 SSD’s that I removed and put away. Years later I took one out to use for something and it warned me that it was part of a RAID. Out of curiosity I attached the second SSD and it correctly recognized the RAID 0 that was on it. I was amazed. So the disks themselves know that they are part of a RAID and will reassemble themselves when all are plugged in.

Yea, copying existing events that are already on the timeline is easy. It’s the Windows Clipboard that would be impossible. I think using an exiting event as Wayne has done is the same result in the end. In fact, it’s better because you don’t have to copy. You just select an event and run the script.

The problem is that the Vegas Script API has no knowledge of what has been copied to the Windows clipboard and therefore doesn’t allow you to paste from the clipboard to the Vegas Pro timeline. This makes something like pasting at markers difficult to implement… however…
The VASST Still Motion plug-in will place media at markers. So if you wanted to drop a colored image at every marker it could do that. It just doesn’t read from the Windows clipboard.
