Personally, I’ve made a bunch of different DVD’s using the autoactivate function and I’ve never had anybody complain that their DVD player wouldn’t play it properly. I have a PS3 and that has always played these correctly.
If you play it on a computer, then it doesn’t exactly work correctly, but most folks don’t use a computer for playing their DVD’s so they don’t mind.It is a little more work to make multiple menus, but if you have a good work flow, it goes pretty fast and looks neater. If you just want to burn a quick and dirty menu, then don’t use it, obviously.
I took the liberty of putting together a couple of screen captures here (four little movies) https://jmrser.com/Tutorials.html

Clint,
I think I understand what you are trying to do, but I was just explaining how I would do it to make it work.
Personally, I would just make a motion background for your menu and you could check out “Simple Motion Menu” down the list of this link
jmrser.com for the details using After Effects. If that’s not helpful, then you could say exactly what steps and commands you are using to create what you have so far so we could try to figure out where your problem is.

Sorry, but I’m not sure what you’re doing.
Am I correct in saying that you 1. Imported an .avi or .mov file as an asset into to the project window
2. Created a timeline from the asset
3. Made the timeline into first play.
4. Then made the end action of the timeline – the menu.
?The loop point is used if you have a motion background for your menu so you would have to create the motion menu in After effects or Premiere. You would include your “pre-roll” in the motion menu.
Another thing you could do is 1. Create a menu with just one button ie “Start” and make it first play.
2. Link the Start button to the menu with the 3 buttons.
3. For the Start button go to transition tab and link just the asset (not a timeline) to the this and when you click the “start” button, the asset will play before you get the menu.Hope that helps,

September 17, 2011 at 2:51 am in reply to: Custom Menu buttons not working correct and need to meet a deadline!Jon,
It would be great to know what version of Encore, Mac or Win, BluRay or SD (regular or wide screen) project.
However, the subpicture highlights can’t show glows or effects if you use them in the usual way. That explains that problem.
I assume you have all your button routing all set up right?
It’s possible you have too many buttons on your menu’s.
https://forums.creativecow.net/archivethread/145/793524#793525.You can only have 18 on a widescreen menu..
Just a couple of thoughts.

Charles,
I read through this thread and I never found the link to the other thread. Did I miss it? If not, would you mind posting that link.
Thanks,Actually, I never understood why it was bad to “cross Post”. Occasionally, I’ve seen the same question posted on several non Cow forums as well, but I always thought it was interesting to get different opinions and thoughts about the question.
Just my opinion.

For what it’s worth, I’ve got a 5 year old Sony DVD player and a 5 year old PS3 and the playlists, both chapter and regular have worked very reliable for me.

John,
What I do is go to the end action of either the separate timelines I am using for each button or the end action of separate chapter playlists I am using for each chapter and
Click the drop down at the end of the End action and go to the menu I want to go to at end, and then you have a list of all the buttons on that menu (and default).
Then I just select the button I want it to go to. Make sense?John Rich

There is a book THe Focal Easy Guide to Encore 2.0 by Jeff Bellune which has a great section on color sets.
You could also check out this tutorial https://jmrser.com/Tutorials.html which is kind of long, but may be helpful (check out Subpicture Highlights on the list as well as Full color subpicture Highlights).
Do me a favor and let me know how it works for you.

Just to be clear, are you saying that you have five buttons with subpicture highlights.
You have designated the subpict (=1) Name, (=2), (=3), (=4), and (=5).The “equal 1,2, etc” designate color sets and you are only allowed 3 colorsets. So, the (=4 and =5) won’t work. To make subpict highlights 4 and 5 work, you have to make them (=1,2, or 3)
Does that make sense?John Rich
