Understand that what we all do is an illusion or in my case, mind bending. I am an editor by trade and sometimes it how things are perceived and not what the headline may say. So a smoke transition could be the smoking gun and put more meaning into a lifeless headline. Hence why we use vignettes and lights to draw the viewers eye to see what we want them to see.

Ok, I’m talking a physical headline from a newspaper, that I have cut out in photoshop that has a paper tear as if it has been ripped from the headlines. I am not creating the text myself, so the preset type effects are out od the question. All I am asking does anyone have a new or interesting way that they may be bring them up or on?

Let me be a little more specific, I’m working in Photoshop & AE 3. My question is more of a stylistic thoughts. I’ve done the spin, the fly from behind the camera, the blur in, etc. Just trying to cull some new ideas or thoughts from the wonderful creatives out there.

Let’s look at it from a Union perspective for a moment. As a union editor, if I don’t have a producer to produce the piece, then I also get paid a producer fee. On the other hand the producer’s union allows them to produce and edit, but they only get paid for their producer job. Plus in most cases, not all but most as a network producer how much time do you have to edit when you are setting up live shots/interviews, writing scripts and trying to get approval from NY? On top of that dealing with your correspondent to?

I am an editor, that produces in conjunction with the producer, but I also do after effects, photoshop, audio mixing, and oh by the way make sure that the levels are correct before my piece hits the air.

There was a job posting not to long ago for a medical school that dealt strictly with the heart and they wanted a shooter, editor, writer, maintenance tech and PR person for one job. Let me get this straight, you want one person to do how many jobs? Oh, but wait your college deals with the heart, not the brain or the feet or the GI tract, but the heart. Many of these companies don’t have a clue of what they are asking for, all they have is a salary number and a job description that someone handed them.

So, more power to the people that want to be all things to all people and not get paid.

One site to look at is productiontrax.com or the Music Bakery. Both these sites are ala cart music, so you don’t have to pay for a blanket in the case of Killer Track. The other nice things about both, but productiontrax is that it is always being updated with new music and you can preview and download what you need. Plus they usually have 2 price points depending on your usage.

I’m glad that I see that the majority feels the way I do and has the passion to respond and be heard. I always feel that any education is good education and if you are a fairly competent editor you know this already, but as we all know there are a lot of people that can punch the buttons, but that doesn’t make them an editor. Worse yet is that some people hiring for editing jobs don’t have any idea what it takes to be an editor other then a piece of paper. Or that you should know AVID, FCP, After Effects, Cinema 4D, Photoshop, write, produce and direct and by the way, we can only pay you as if you were just leaving college.

I’ve been an AVID editor for over 16 years and it amazes me how many people say they have taken AVID training, but have no clue or experience editing what so ever. I got burned a couple of times in the late 90’s when I had to hire some freelancers to pick up some of the overflow work. Needless to say, I would up finishing half the sessions, because they were clueless other than pushing buttons and no client skills.

I would imagine that we have all encountered people like this and with how cheap it is to buy a system they are here to stay. But I have a saying that maybe a little brash, “You can hire me now and pay once or go cheap and pay twice.” Funny thing is it has happened many times over and the last time it happened, the client lost most of his footage over the person he hired incompetence. Cost him more in the long run. Oh well.

That is why you hire a professional!!!

Depending on what you are looking for, I use iStock a lot they have a good selection of clips and they range from SD to 1080i. The other site is Pond5, they have some good stuff as well.

MPEG Streamclip enables you to make a file that can be brought into Final Cut. I have used this software many times and it works great. I’m haven’t had to pull surveilance files off of a dvd, so I can’t help you if the MPEG Streamclip doesn’t work, but I am sure that someone else on our wonderful form maybe able to help.
