Since you are installing (2)Internal Sata drives of the same spec, may I suggest striping them as a single drive at Raid 0. This will help allow for better playback performance. You can do a hardware raid during the Win 7 install, or you can do a software raid after installation. Check the user manual that comes with the Asus board for info on the hardware raid setup. The Ultimate version of Vista is required for the software raid, but am not sure which version will allow for this in Win 7. My last Google search did not find the answer. A call to Microsoft should give you the answer. Your playback performance in Raid 0 will be at it’s best (short of installing a very expensive SAS Raid system), but if one of your 2 striped discs fails, you will lose all of your data on both drives. Consider a 3rd (internal or external drive) for data backup. The October issue of Government Video magazine has a very clear description of the various levels of Raid. Everything else on your list seems fine for a base system. Smart move on the SSD system drive.

Has there been a change in your display card drivers? Did you upgrade your OS or install recent updates? You might try re-installing your display card driver, but check first and see what version you are currently running – then check online for any updates, etc.

If you search here on the Cow, you will find several recent threads on this subject. Obviously, budget is usually the deciding factor. There are some pretty good PC based workstations out there now, and the HP z800 has a very positive review in the October edition of Event DV magazine, with some amazingly quick render comparisons. I have built 4 new workstations for my edit bays over the past 16 months. I pick out each component – from the case, fans, etc. up to the processor, drives, etc. If you have a good local builder, you can often get the best components with a careful install for considerably less than a factory based workstation. There are the newest iCore based 5 series from Intel out now, or the dual proc Nehalem Zeon based system powerehouses showing up now. Plan for WIndows 7 – one version even has Windows XP built in. I run all of the Sony Tools and Adobe CS4 as well, with no problems on Vista. In addition to the procs, the 2 most significant components to look at from a performance standpoint are the use of a Solid State drive for your OS, and a minimum of Raid 0 for your media drives. Like just about everyone else in the Pro environment, you will eventually be dealing with HD. Don’t skimp now if you can afford the faster components.

Two of my self-built systems have Asus Mboards with (1) DVI and (1) HDMI on-board, but I use the Matrox Parhelia and drive (3)separate monitors. I’m looking for true real time HDMI I/O that the above mentioned cards/devices offer – they just don’t offer it for Sony Vegas – yet!

Interesting – I have spent the last 27 years, among many other production services, transferring 8, Super8 and 16mm film to video. I see the things that you describe on a weekly basis. Now, with digital capture to a NLE, I spend quite a bit of time in CCing these files to mitigate these very effects. I know, shoot some 8mm film, transfer it to video, and, there you go! Just kidding – good luck.

Intel is releasing the iCore 5 series. Google Maximum PC for a comparison test with the iCore 7 series vs. the 5 series – render tests, cost comparisons, peripheral requirements, etc. Also, plan ahead for at least a Raid 0 configuration for your media drive. Makes a difference with HD files. My next build will definitely include a Solid State system drive – capacity is doubling quickly and how big of a drive does one really need for the OS anyway. The read speeds are amazing. Feedback from the current Windows 7 pre-release users is a big thumb’s up. Finally, do not skimp on ram – it is very inexpensive at the moment. Good luck!
