We’ve used the QIO for years, but with an old 17″ Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. We bought and tried Sonnet’s Thunderbolt adaptor into which the QIO plugged, but we never got it to work. We had kernel panics and all sorts of issues so we use the old system which works-no problems. The Sonnet may work fine by now, but we really don’t shoot a lot of P2 any more so won’t try it again.

Exactly how are you monitoring? Is the audio from of the Ultrastudio Express out of sync with the video?

SmallHD has very good monitors. The ac7 starts around $600. BM has their new Video Assist which has a 5″ 1920×1080 monitor built in for $500. You don’t need the recorder, although, you could use it to record proxy or backup files. Marshall also makes decent monitors.

We have an 11-16 Tokina we use with our URSA. It’s a terrific lens.

Make sure the lens is parfocal. If not, you’ll need 2-axis control for both a zoom and focus motor.

I would think wider is better because it’s easier to frame and keep the subject in frame. Why not rent/borrow both lenses and see which works best for your situation.

I totally agree with Richard. FXPX has very nice eq plugs from Logic, but other than rolling off the high end, none will deal with the distortion. iZotope RX4 has a Declipper module that can help. However, there comes a point where the signal is so trashed, it can’t be recovered.

First thing I’d look at is if your input is switched to mic or line. What may be happening is you’re feeding a line level signal to a mic in. The line level signal is way too hot for the mic input.

We’ve been using RX since its first release. Back when I started in the business if someone said they could do what RX does today, they would’ve been called a magician. I consider it an indispensable tool.
