    Thank you Erik, I understand this now. The line art (vector) file originated in AI. I imported it into PS as a Smart Object which I thought was supposed to keep it’s original attributes. I see now that this is not the case, especially when importing it from PS into AE.

    hey remington, no i don’t know what a “track matte” is so please explain…
    btw, i assume you mean to create a text layer in AE with black type over a white background using a “solid” white layer, right? the “luma matte” is applied to the text layer?

    wow, thanks so much for your crystal clear answer kevin.
    i work with huge files… do you know how much memory photoshop can take advantage of? i’m not sure if it would be smart to try to run both programs at the same time, unless it’s just a matter of memory?
    and lastly, is there really a limit to the file size that AE can work with?
