Are you iMAP or Pop? I’m assuming you have your own dedicated server for your site? Last week I ran into holy heck with my father-in-laws gmail in Apple Mail. Turns out he had a ridiculous number of emails with attachments that needed to download. Once I left it up for a few hours / overnight, it started working smoothly again.

FCP isn’t, but CS5.5 is – however you could probably install a trial on the rental mac, assuming that no one has installed it on the rental machine before. Also, you may run into issues with Leopard drivers on your old HD not working on a newer mac pro. I’d say that’s a pretty risky way to handle it.
Maybe it’s time to invest in a macbook pro.

I’ve run into WD my book problems before. It’s possible that the HD has built in firmware that won’t let it be formatted. It can be very frustrating because they try to force their less than stellar software down on you. Another possibility is that your HD is bad – it happens.

Walter, I think by flash he meant an SSD for the OS/program files and a 2Tb internal drive for media. A Thunderbolt RAID is obviously better (and more secure for media).
David, I think the reality is FCPX is kind of a beta program. Give it another year of updates and maybe it won’t crash so much.

CS5, FCS3, & FCPX. The raid is fast. We have decks, but use the other rooms to lay back and digitize with. If we needed to though, we could get the Blackmagic Thunderbolt thing. Still getting used to a single monitor, but two 27’s on the 12 core feels too wide, so I don’t think it’s a big deal.

We just built a very unprofessional Core i7 iMac system with Lion, 16gb RAM, a Promise Pegasus 12tb. Compared to our similarly spec’ed out 8 core, the iMac is much faster. Compared to our current generation 12 core Mac Pro with 64 gb ram and 16tb mini-sas RAID, the iMac also wins at most tasks.
Beef up the iMac a little more and I won’t miss the Mac Pro at all. Maybe they’ll call it an iMac Pro. Not really feeling abandoned.

Turn off external monitoring if you’re using that. This happens sometimes, but it shouldn’t.

I’ve been wondering if promos translate as well compared to most edit styles on the cow. We don’t do long string outs so renders aren’t really an issue for us. It’s completely possible that the other systems are better for longer form. That said, I also feel that X isn’t really suited for promos either. All that metadata stuff is kind of irrelevant when all you’re looking for is :30 to 2:00 of awesomeness.
I had heard that AMA was best for preview purposes. Is that wrong?

Apple said they’ll add 3rd party support next year. That was my first clue.

I downloaded the Avid trial last week. Yikes. Stupid things like dragging a clip up to create a new track don’t exist. It reminded me of all the things I hated about Avid for years. After a few hours I deleted it. Oh, and it took 90 seconds to import a 30 second clip in prores. There’s no way I’m going back to that.
We tried premiere and playback didn’t work right on both a screen and external monitor using Kona 3. I hear about enough little glitches in premiere to where I don’t have any desire to go further.
So we’re staying on with FCP7 for now. Maybe it’s a dead tech, but I’d rather hang out here and wait for X to get fixed next year than deal with any other NLE. Maybe CS6 will be better. Definitely not going to Avid though. I imagine if you’re fluent in Avid it’s an awesome thing, but it seems so unnecessarily complicated that I won’t be leading us down that path. If anything, the others remind me of why I like FCP7 so much. I did try the alternatives with as much of an open mind as I could muster. My first edits ever were on Avid – I’d love to go back to them – but it’s not right for us at this time. I feel handcuffed by it.
Maybe 2012 will a glorious year for NLE’s.
