Interesting – Thanks Dennis. Prelude seems pretty useful after playing with it some. We’re going to try it out with Premiere on our next spot and go from there. Not sure if my brain can handle learning a MAM and Premiere all at once! 🙂

Interesting. I hadn’t thought of that CatDV. According to Adobe, Prelude is open to 3rd parties – which Apple is very good about working with….not.

We played around with Prelude and it looks promising, but I really had hoped that the actual file contained all the metadata. We’ll probably use Prelude initially for a project or two and see what happens. I’ll keep CatDV open as an option though.

    Thanks!

I believe you can’t just format it easily. I’d either

    1. upgrade my hard driver to a bigger / better one and then install lion on it, then restore from time machine backup.

    2. or clone the drive using super duper, fresh install SL and then upgrade it to Lion online.

Just make sure you have some sort of backup of the original drive so you don’t lose your stuff.

  • Looks like the article was just updated:

“Google is also testing out an enhanced feature for BMW owners. For just $72,000 per year, drivers can purchase the Premiere/Luxury/Megalomania package. The premiere tier is much like the regular service, although more tailored to the driving style BMW drivers are accustomed to. The car comes without signals, is programmed to follow the car ahead by a distance of 5 inches vs 3 car lengths, has a programmed ‘random lane change’ feature, provide random honks at other google cars, and will operate at two speeds: floor it, and slam on the brakes.”

I will say this – AE renders are faster, a restart of the system fixed the audio sync issue, and I do like the improvements on AE.

I hacked the 5770 to work and it crapped out with dropped, stuttery playback. I have had to force quit Premiere about 4 times in just a few hours of playing around (before and after the hack). Also previewing a comp in AE has demonstrated that there are still problems with audio sync (h264 quicktime problem?). I enable multiple processors, tried to ram preview a 10 second comp, and got a warning that ‘initializing background processes may take a while’, turned it off after a few minutes of nothing, and now the audio won’t sync in AE. Even restarting didn’t fix the AE sync.

Not a big fan of having to select a track I want to make changes to in Premiere. Are there shortcuts for activating and deactivating tracks for edit? Rendering seems to take about as long as FCP – and on that subject, how the heck do you turn off the automatic playback of the sequence after render? It makes me lose my place and gets quite annoying.

Also noticed that the window layout got wonky. Tried to revert to the original one and wouldn’t budge – had to reset it. Weird.

I really really want Premiere to work and make us happy. Having to constantly click the side of the timeline to do stuff is maddening – as is having to place the playhead wherever I want to paste transitions, etc. So many weird quirks here. Maybe this is normal. I’m trying to keep an open mind while we work out the idiosyncrasies… Surprised at how many times I have to quit and reopen it to get it to work right. And where’s my CS6 license email already?

It’s tough because I like the Adobe guys and I know how criticism of something you put your heart into can be stressful. Just not sure what’s going on here. I’m hoping it’s one of those situations where I’m just using it wrong.

12 core mac pro, 5770, RAID 5, 64 gigs of ram, blackmagic decklink studio, etc.

Great to hear, Armando. Out of curiosity, what bugs did you encounter? I installed the trial last night and a few things made me very happy. Love to know what obstacles I should be prepared for though.
    Thanks!

  • Let’s say you’re working on a show with 6 different editors. All the editors know to hit p to turn of magnetism. You time the show out with the network accordingly, it’s going through all approvals, it’s virtually ready to ship. Network traffic has timed the show out perfectly, logs for breaks are created, we’re all lined up to ship. Then talent makes a request to change out a scene or a shot to something more flattering. It’s a big deal and the network wants to accommodate, but you only have an editor who hasn’t touched the project before. He hops on, doesn’t get the p right, changes the timing of the by 20 seconds, the producer doesn’t catch it, and all hell breaks loose.

Magnetism is an additional caveat to be wary of. A hard ‘off’ for it isn’t that much to ask.

Does apple really even care about the Human Centipad market anymore?
