Why not just let FCPX copy all your media to the event via a copy and and also copy relevant projects as well. Wipe your external drive, then copy (within fcpx) all your projects and events relevant to the project back to your now clean external HD? He can make all his edits, and then when he sends it back – merge events?

We have really specific reasons behind not copying media into our events, but it sounds like you’d be a good candidate for doing it that way – for this particular project at least.

Not at all. I get strange things that happen like if I add a favorite clip and then go into the project timeline and hit spacebar – the favorite still plays in the source thumbnail. I have to select a different clip and shift-f it from the project to get the project to actually play back. This happens maybe once or twice a day.

I have a few odd little quirks like some tracks don’t play audio in a compound clip (sometimes) and things like that. We’ve also found that key wording shortcuts sometimes don’t work.

I’ll still take these little quirks over “General Error” and “Cannot Save Project”, from FCP7.

We’re juuuust about to build a Mac-Mini server using a Sonnet Echo Express Pro, one of our mini-sas RAIDS w/R380, and a Small Tree Gigabit ethernet server card. It connects over ethernet.

I suppose you could daisy chain two Small Tree cards between two Sonnet expresses. We wanted to get the Magma Thunderbolt Chassis, but it’s been awaiting certification since April and still isn’t available. Magma says this could change any day.

I’m going to wait till after Mountain Lion is launched though. Probably in about 2 weeks. New hardware *may* come out (knock on wood).

X2oPro doesn’t work for us right now because it embeds the entire audio track of the source, although they’ve stated they’ll add the ability to limit stems/handles in the next version. With 5 different hour long episodes in a single :30, the AAF file would be really bloated. Right now we’re assigning roles, making sure elements in roles don’t overlap, and then generate role based aif files Our mixer in protools just runs ‘strip silence’ off each track, and suddenly he’s able to slide things around and manage them as needed. Basically we lose handles, but that’s rarely an issue for us.

I agree in many aspects Bill. Today though, we tried to build a string out of 5 spots in X because it’s important that we learn where problems can come from. Hooo-boy. Painful to say the least. It took all afternoon – it was a comical mess.

So we’ll be keeping a FCP7 project just to conform protools mix files and final spot string outs with multiple versions. Could be worse – some things 7 is just going to be much better at. This way, we can make the most of x for editing and concept creation speed, and also take advantage of 7’s crisp ability to lay back tape and easily manage a large string out of spots.

Sure – it was either an episode of a show digitized from HDCam or a movie EPK (movie epk’s sometimes have odd track orders). We were very green with x so as time has progressed we’ve learned ways around it. I do think that we still have to break things apart sometimes for export to protools as roles. I can honestly barely remember the scenario, I just remember that it happened.

Even though we started about a month ago on X, it seems like it was a LOOOOONG month in terms of how much we’ve figured out. It was the same way with legacy FCP. I still cringe when I think about some of the hacks I did to just play back a sequence correctly in the old days.
