Yes. So is CC. And Maya. And Logic Pro X. And Office 365 with email hosting. 4k monitors. And macs. Lots of macs. Plus, Thunderbolt RAIDs, IP over Thunderbolt, multiple RAIDs broken down between clients so that servers don’t get bogged down with several people working on the same RAID, etc. More talented people are also part of the plan. The number one thing on the list is exploring new avenues of creative and challenging myself and the team to never settle for passable work.
What’s not in the plan 5 years down the road? Pro Tools. Avid. PCI anything. Thunderbolt displays and monitors that aren’t 4k or Retina. RAID cards. Spinning drives. Tape.
Sheesh – in 5 years FCPX will be phenomenal. I’m not saying it’s perfect now, not by any means, but there’s enough good stuff about it now that keeps me mostly pleased with it’s progress. I think most of it’s issues right now are related to 10.9.1 being a bit buggy. Very hopeful that 10.9.2 will drop this week and right the boat a bit. FCPX 10.1.2 should also help out some, but I have no idea when that will come out.
Personally I think Apple is very focused on this industry. More so now than any time in the last 5 years I’d say.

Yep. Looking back it was about 3 to 4 years from when we first started working with HD to when we actually started delivering HD. The thing that HD brought – and was accelerated by the lack of HDCam tapes thanks to the tsunami damaging the Sony plant – was nets getting super comfy with digital delivery. That digital delivery ability will be super useful with H265 and 4k. SD to HD was painful because it was a analogue to digital transition. HD to 4k is a much easier because it’s all still digital.

I’m more interested in seeing what Blackmagic comes out with this year. A production cinema camera with higher frame rates would pretty much win me over.
We have the Sony FS700, but when their 4k Recorder ended up costing more than the camera and turned it into an unwieldy bazooka, they pretty much blew whatever desire I had to get it. It’s also really annoying they charge for a firmware upgrade.
That’s pretty much how it goes these days. Company releases breakthrough product, then fails to follow up with making it the perfect product because of terror at cannibalizing their other product categories. How many cameras has Canon released since the 5D Mark II? Like, 80? I always felt like the FS700 was a hail-mary fluke from Sony. It’s still phenomenal for slow motion, but once you’ve worked with RAW color it’s kind of hard to want to go back to H264.

Not UK but we ordered 2 the day after release and got the first one (12 core) about 4 weeks ago and the second (8 core) came in this past Wednesday. Both have the biggest GPU’s.
We chose 12 core for our graphics guy who runs Maya and Adobe CS6. We got the 8 core for the FCPX editor who was on a 2011 iMac. Needless to say, both guys are super happy! We chose the 12 core for graphics because multi-core helps with renders. The 8 Core was for FCPX because the higher clock speed of the 8 CPU’s runs FCPX faster than 12 – or so we were told.
The best surprise actually came from running our ATTO 10 Gbe Thunderlink speedtest to the NAS. 700MB R/W. That was kind of insane.
Biggest annoyance right now is that there’s not a lot of software ready to run the GPU’s. Give it 6 months and perhaps that will improve.

We did our first source 4k RED RAW multi camera project on FCPX last month – delivery was 1080i HDCam. I really thought it was going to be a pain the the butt to work with all the footage but we edited in proxy and it was surprisingly painless. We even did coloring in X. The flexibility of working a 1080i project with 4k footage, allowing for crops and zooms without resolution loss was pretty awesome. It was edited on a 2011 iMac.
It motivated me to buy one of those Seiki 50″ TV’s just so I could see the footage better. I hope we get lots more 4k work because that was a fun workflow.
