Don’t confuse megabyte with megabit. 100Mbps for the GH4 is actually about 12.5MBps (the capital B makes it megabyte vs the lower case b of megabit). You could run almost 9 layers of that GH4 4k footage over 1 Gbps ethernet that is standard on every mac sold.

That DNxHD footage was actually only 22MBps, still plenty of room for that in a gigabit connection.

Hey David, I have an extra ATTO R680 and a 24 TB 8 drive ProAvio RAID we no longer use just collecting dust. The RAID gets about 400-500 Mbps read/write speeds if I remember correctly. I’d be happy to discuss sending it to you to try out if you’d like.

While I personally love Aperture, it certainly chugs on big databases and management of photos was and is clunky. Vaults and folders and albums and etc – then they brought in integration with iPhoto which made it even more confusing. I think ultimately this is a good thing. My needs are predominantly dodge tool, skin smoothing, blur, blemish removal, levels, raw fine tuning/sharpening, and publishing. Probably (hopefully) most of those will be included in Photos – but as you say, if not they’ll come in updates later.

I’m very pleased with the whole upload everything to the cloud idea. I’ve been uploading everything to iCloud photo streams anyways, so I see the promise of how it can work well. Let’s hope it’s open for 3rd party plugin developers.

And if this new generation of Apple apps loses the ‘i’ in front everything, that’s great.

895 Mb Read and Write. And that’s with other people also accessing the server.

Anybody wanna buy some ATTO 10 Gbe TB1 boxes? I have two for sale.

So far we’re only getting about 167Mb read and about 200Mb read with a few peaks to 300 but it’s not as consistent or as fast as our ATTO TB1 boxes. The ATTO’s get about 800 Mb r/w. Granted, I haven’t had much time to work on them yet so perhaps Promise has more information.

Our Mac Pro server currently has no graphics card. It DOES have an iCloud account, so when I need to access it I screen share into it through finder from another mac at the office over the network. You might not really even need the iCloud account. One caveat, once you’ve turned on screen sharing in settings, DO NOT TURN IT OFF. You’ll have to dismantle everything and put a graphics card back in it to reenable screen sharing. That happened once when I wasn’t thinking about what I was doing and it sucked.

Bob Zelin always yells at me about this, but it works, so there you go.
